Ok, I have fooled around with enough Benchmades, Spydercos, and other brands. So, this Spring, I have been saving, and I almost have enough cash for a CR knife. But of course, like I always do, I didn't think about which knife I should get. I am between the Umfaan and the small Sebenza. It will be my EDC, I will be using it for light work (packages, letters, etc.) and I would like a pocket clip. I don't really know alot about either model. Thanks for any help.

I recently began carrying a used Umfaan (thanks to forumite Recoil). It has no pocket clip, but this decorated slab knife ought to be protected from loose coins in my pocket -- sure enough, it comes with a nice leather pouch which completely covers the handles. Only the lanyard is exposed. I find the lanyard perfect for retrieval from my pocket, then from the pouch.

The Umfaan does for me exactly what you said you want the tool for.

My decorated Small stays in the box (it has both a clip and a pouch). It would be great to carry, too, fitting neatly in my trouser pocket without forming the 'big knife lump'.

My plain small is on the way here, to the rescue. I intend to let it fight with loose coins and I'll let you know who wins. I suspect the rough titanium finish will win, but show streaks of U. S. Government Mint debris after the fight ends.

If I find dimes caught between the blade and a handle (a problem with my nice Mathes folder), then it'll be back to the pouch with the small, too.

Anybody else have that problem with the unpouched Sebenza? If so, let me know now so I don't even begin the scarring, marring process.

I think this an easy one. Start with the pouch.

I you must have a clip, then you must get a small. Before you decide, check out the Mnandi

I would start with the small myself- I think it the most versatile and gravitate to it in the plain or a wood inlay version for a daily carry... now I like the umfaan and have a few for personal use and also larges but for a start I think a small over the umfaan... though if you use it only for what you said an umfaan will do it and then some... though they do NOT come with a clip.

The Small Sebenza sounds like you. It's about as big as you want to go in an EDC unless you are wearing jeans or heavyweight pants. For dressy dress and lighter duty pants, the Small is about as big as you want to get. Anything smaller and you really start sacrificing utility.

The small is a very versitile and usable size.

Okay. But then the clip is extra baggage and thickness. This'll let me play with the wrench, to remove the clip. But then what?

1) Replace the screw without the clip. (But the end of the screw now passes the inside of the handle and comes 'way too close to the blade tip.)

or

2) Fill the screw hole with loose pouch-leather fibers.

or

3) Consult other owners for a (probably) well-known solution.

I did look in the user's manual but it basically says to not cut yourself and don't expect a pocket clip on a Umfaan.

A bit of mother-of-pearl or ivory or grey titanium would look good in that cavity. What do others do? Is the solution on the Reeve price list?

See the thread by that name in this forum. Or wait until September...

There is a factory option solution for removing the clip. I don't remember the details, but check with a dealer or CRK, they can fill you in.

Mark,
CR makes a little titamium plug they call an insert that fits into the hole if you don't want to use the pocket clip. Fits exactly and is made from titanium so it's the same exact color. Costs about $21.00.
I'm going to order one next week as I just got the little pouch and a nice sheath.
