sorry, probably been done before but i am looking to buy my first esee. i want some opinions on the 4 vs 6. it would be used for hunting, fishing, camping, and general bush knife. i don't think the whole survival, bushcraft will come into play with me but who knows. if you have an opinion on the subject please comment. thanks.

Hunting, 4
Camping, 4
General bush/woods knife, 4

Boy that was easy. :D

The 4 is a great all around genera purpose knife. My favorite in the lineup.

The general consensus in previous threads of this nature is that the ESEE-4 is the way to go for a stand alone, do-it-all knife.

Do you need a cutting surface length of 4" or 6"? That'll solve your problem in a hurry.

Do you carry an axe? Machete? Take a 4 as your knife.
Don't own a 6, but a 4 is a great knife. I would think the 4 for the hunting chores.
Only one blade, get the 6.

if you have small hands, the 4 is great.
I don't, so the 6 is more comfortable to use.

The 4 is smaller but I don't think it's too small for larger hands though the 6 is more "filling" in the hand.

When in doubt, buy both. Problem solved.

They are very reputable and economical enough to afford both for a similar price of a lesser knife from another maker.

I appreciate the 4 myself, but for one having larger mitts than most and sometimes handling knives with gloves on, the 6 is what I reach for. I wish the 4 had just a slightly longer grip. A half inch would help a lot. As it is, I find the 4 a bit small for serious use and the 5 is overkill with weight for my uses. I might as well sharpen a crowbar instead.

if push came to shove one could chop and baton with the 4 but just not as good, correct? i see very little chopping and batoning with my use, more general camp/hunt use.

It's a toss-up between the 4 and 6. The 4 is the most versatile in the line up, but the 6 give you some more camping/wood prepping capabilities. You'd be fine with either, so honestly I'd go with the knife you think looks cooler. Enjoy.

The 6 is cooler so it wins my vote.....

Its one of my favorite blades

where/how are you going to wear it? i've tied my esee-4 in front right on the belt buckle horizontally and also on my side vertically and it doesn't get in the way in any kind of seating or crouching positions. i've also worn the 4 as a neck knife just fine...the 6's extra length might get in the way depending on your build/how tall you are, etc.

for field dressing, gutting fish, etc. did you consider an izula-ii? it's perfectly fine for those tasks. i had an izula that i strapped to my life vest while kayaking/fishing and it's the perfect size too. grab a cardboard, shape it roughly to those knives' shapes (just a rectangle with the same width & height) and see if it might get in the way of your other gear.

You're going to get them all within a year, so don't stress it. Flexxx is right, the 6 is unbeatable.

Get the 6 you will NOT be disappointed. It will do everything a 4 can do only better, But the 4 cant do everything a 6 can do....;) as well.

You will have more of them anyway.:D
