btw, I have to also suggest if you don't want to use all the money you have set aside for this, maybe try a Taiwan Lightning as they have a great rep, and cheap enough you can see if you really like or find useful the otf designs.

I saw that, it depends on the breaker, they use 2. Mine you can't move at all on any of them. You must have the tool, which they sell, there are no holes in the new ones to use an allen wrench or the sort. Some people use a drill face with no bit to get a grip and able to turn the glass breaker, but causes damage at the same time.
So a Microtech tool is required. Got it. Thanks.

The problem with G&G Hawk knives is they are produced in limited runs. I don't know if the Deadlock will be produced again.
It is, I'm on the mailing list...but the last batch sold out before I even got the email (last name starts with V) :(.

I've seen more than one person on BF say you do not need a special tool to get the clip off. The breaker holds the clip there, so if the breaker has holes you can put something in the hole and use that for leverage to loosen, or put a microfiber or something over the breaker and rotate it with pliers or whatever. Then you just put the breaker back on. I think that was the gist of it.

I haven't tried to take any of the breakers off - but I got a scout carry leather sheath for my troodons, so if I want to carry them they go in there.

I don't have any BM OTFs - but I am happy with all my MT OTFs.

Wolverine777 Wolverine777 , get a Paragon Warlock for the both of us, I know I know, not an OTF but it's just so neat:

I think quite a lot of people get an OTF for the fidget factor, the Warlock has that in spades. I would love to own one but they fall under prohibited knives here (Gravity Knife)

Might want to check out the latest Hogue offerings, both theirs and the HK brand they now make. I have heard some good things about them.
I second this. Namely because I want to buy one but don't have the money and want to see how they are before I pull the trigger.

Pretty certain that the Hawks have said there will be a midtech/production Deadlock ... at some point. Can't remember whether it was instagram or their newsletter.

So their most recent run (which is currently in assembly) is, as I understand it, about 40 knives. These are a custom production prototype for the upcoming mid-tech run of Deadlocks to be made by Millit. I’d guess inside a year for the mid-tech but who knows?

"Clackity-clack!" Agreed... these require some practice, too.

Those look really cool. I like the concept. The Phoenix is really nice looking too.

I picked up a Phoenix recently, definitely fun to play with...a really satisfying sound to the opening/closing :).

OTFs make somewhat questionable EDCs, to be honest. I use a Combat Troodon most days of the week, sure, but I wouldn’t trust it beyond minor cutting tasks and the inability to clean it without taking it apart is a bit of a drag. Also, one has to completely clean off the blade prior to retracting it to avoid getting additional (potentially jamming) gunk inside of it.

All that said, both are good choices. I like the looks of the UTX more, though.

This! 100%
The UTX-85 is a great choice for a otf, I think MT really nailed it on the overall reliability with this model. Like Comeuppance said there a bit "finicky" sometimes....a tiny piece of tape stuck to the blade after cutting open a box will render it useless until cleaned. Great fun knives!

I have the phaeton, a UTX-85, a Combat Troodon, a Scarab and I like them all.
I would choose the phaeton over the 85.
I like S30V better than Elmax.
I like Benchmades customer service more then Microtechs.
The phaeton is more lightweight.
The phaeton has a longer handle (my pinky and index fingers aren’t quite as close to the edge).
The phaeton has a longer blade.
FYI I bought both new, the 85 was sharp, but the phaeton was scary sharp.
I like that.
The Phaeton’s put together with torx screws, not some high security screw.
Both have the same basic mechanism design with minor differences here and there. BM’s springs are in a plastic sleeves, where as the 85’s springs just slide along the metal rack.
Both are well made.
However, if something goes wrong and assistance is required, so you have to send it in, MT sucks.
BM for the win.

How stiff is the Phaeton's action?

The Deadlock is cool but at $1,200 or so way out of the range I spend on knives. If they can midtech it down to $4-500 I would at least daydream about it.
