Which Poncho?

I have been looking at making my own out of Goretex. So far the widest material I have found is 57", so a seam would be incorporated. I have spent more nights under a USGI poncho than any other shelter. I dislike the poncho liner. It provides little warmth and it is impossible to keep in place (slippery). Way too much bulk and weight. A surplus wool blanket of the same size and weight is far warmer, and still works when damp or wet. My experience with this equipment is extensive, as I used it for the 26 years that I spent in the Army.

You must've used a different poncho liner than I have.
They weigh nothing.

Guys that don't think they're warm enough -- seriously, what kind of weather did you try it in? They are a warm weather piece of gear and can be used as a bag liner in colder weather. Maybe people are trying to make them something they arean't?

Once again guys thanks for the informed input.

I might immediatly pick up an army poncho for hard use and exposed to barbed wire bit on the bottom of my bum bag and lokk at higher quality ones for my genral camping kit

Thank you

I use the golite poncho tarp, it is really long but has a few buttons to make it shorter for when used as a poncho. As a tarp with one trekking pole and four steaks i can have a pretty rainproof shelter while allowing for enough ventilation. When i go out solo this is my preferred choice of shelter/raingear
