I used to backpack a lot and want to get back into I. I usually will go up to 5-6 days at a time. In the past I just used a leatherman and a buck pathfinder. I try to keep the weight down to keep the hike more enjoyable. Ill probably go with izula. Does anyone bring something bigger?

My RC-4 goes with me everywhere, the additional weight doesn't bother me.

RAT Pack# 64

I don't have an rc4 yet but I plan on getting it soon. Maybe I'll carry that and let my gf carry the izula

I rarely leave my house without Izula & RC-3 or RC-4 or HEST,If I were going back packing I'd take Izula & RC-6 or RC-4 or RC-3 or HEST.

I don't think this helps much!

RAT PACK #91

I decided on the RC-4 as the best all-around, all-purpose backpacking knife.
Chose the orange handle for two reasons: theoretically easier to find if I ever drop it, and strapped to the outside of my pack it might save me from being shot by overzealous hunters. lol

I like the orange handles but haven't held one. How grippy is it compared the linen micarta

I would go with an izula, a sven saw, and an RC6 or very small hatchet. If you have proper tools, you can maintain a good enough fire so that you can skimp on the stove. I primarily cook over a dakota firehole and carry an esbit emergency as a backup. The versatility of your toolkit gives you may more options than a stove and fuel.

If just one, RC6.

Better is to take an RC3, and a chopper. If you want to keep the weight down, make the chopper a machete, they weigh very little.

I wouldn't bring an Izula if you're going to do a lot of work, a knife with scales is much niocer to use for prolonged work.

Agreed, RC3 and a hatchet is the best option...

I think you are right, I would be better off stepping up to an rc3 or 4 in case I had a heavy work load.

For hiking, I'd take my RC-4 and IZULA.

Horseback with a pack animal, still take the RC-4 and IZULA, but would add a small forest axe.

RC-3 or RC-4.

But I like having a substantial knife with me. No reason you couldn't go on an extended trip with just an Izula. Or just a SAK. Heck, if you pack dehydrated food and use a stove you might not ever need a knife. But if you are posting on this forum, that's probably not your style....

an izula. do you really need anything else? i am assuming that you are carrying a stove on established trails and not bushwhacking into the backcountry.

+1 - My choice

I own an RC3, 4, 6 and izula - the RC3 can handle anything you throw at it and its a nice and thin slicing monster. Hatchet can take care of heavier chopping.

I always carry a hatchet when I backpack/camp - used to carry a Fiskers. I now have a Wetterlings Large Hunting Axe that I have been using for the past week and a Brian Andrews modified S&N Pen Bay hatchet that just arrived today (it is SWEEEEET!).

I know a lot of people think a hatchet/hand axe is overkill, but there is just something about carrying one that is very comforting to me.

I usually have the Izula in my bag as well just because its so light and a great backup.
