Which S30V folder?

Just curious, why don't you like the choil?

Ever take a look at the Spyderco Military? A classic and one of the best desigend folders of all time. Similar in many ways to the above pictured "new" Swamp Rat.

I have 3 Striders, Benchmade/Ritter Griptilian, and have had a couple Sibert fixed blades all in S30V. The steel is really impressive. I think all the designs you mentioned are great and with S30V you can't go wrong. The Bladetech is an awesome knife, that would be my choice.

Gajinoz,
I work on an oil and gas drilling rig, and one of the most common cutting tasks I encounter is opening 50 or 100 lb. sacks of chemicals. A choil forces me to choke up on the blade past the choil when I stab the knife in to rip open the sack. They also seem to hang up a lot when cuttting other materials. For me, it's like having use of only 3/4 of the blade length, because I can't use the last little bit, because I have to keep the choil from hanging up. A real small choil isn't much of a problem to grind of with a whetstone and reprofile the edge, but the larger ones are a functional disadvantage for me.
Morgoth, I looked at the Spyderco military last night after I posted here. I'm not crazy about the profile of most of Spydercos blades, but the Military does seem to be a solid working knife. I'm not really looking for a new edc, but will probably opt for the Military if the Swamp Rat doesn't change.

Todd,
The Military is possibly the best working folder ever made. Some things about it:
1. Very light weight
2. Enlarged hole for opening with gloves
3. Very grippy G10
4. Fully flat ground blade (amazing slicing ability)
5. belly for when it's needed
6. S30V
7. nested liner lock (which means it's embedded into the g10 and stronger then non nested liner locks)
8. large handle for gloved hands, and many grips

I'm not sure what Spyderco's you don't like but almost all of them are optimised for the highest performance. (Although they may be ugly as all hell.)

Check the the Delica/Endura, Calypso Jr., Lil' Temperance, and Paramilitary as well.

Todd really nailed the problem with choils, they snag on things. I don't like the blade angle and the handle dimensions on the Military. I like a blade that is directly in line with the handle (or even slightly back tilted) since I often cut with the blade turned up and guard the point with my finger. That doesn't work with a forward tilted blade. I also am amazed at how big the handle is on a Military compared to the blade length. This makes the knife excessively bulky in the pocket. The design I really liked the best was the Starmate (out of production). The blade was much straighter and the handle around a half inch shorter.

Yeah, some love it, some hate it. Very little "in between" with many Spyderco designs. They seem to be made for very specific purposes and if that certain purpose isn't what you need it for, you aren't going to like them.

Personally, I love the handle on the Military. It's comfortable in my hands, and is large enough to fit comfortably in hands with thick winter gloves on. I'm not sure what kind of grip you are talking about with the blade turned up, but I must use another kind, becuase the blade poses no problems for me. Anyway, the point is you don't like it and I love it. Thats Spyderco designs for you.

i second the 520a - beefy overbuilt folder with not too huge a blade and not too hard to find online

Foxhole, that swamp rat folder you pictured looks OK but the handle doesn't look too comfortable to grip. Sharp edges for one thing. Yes, I know it's a prototype but I hope they "smooth" out the handle a little.

I had the opportunity to handle the SR folder proto at Blade. I saw the pictures that were posted of it before I left for Atlanta and let me tell you that you can't appreciate this knife by just looking at the pictures of it. The handles are very comfortable in the hand and the only sharp edges I found were right were they were supposed to be, on the business end. I know it is hard to judge when you just have two dimensions to go on, but this thing will replace my Al Mar SERE 2000 and ride in whatever pocket isn't occupied by my flashlight or Sebenza.

The SR folder is very comfortable. Almost 'zactly like the Active Duty, for those of you familiar with that model.

Any of you check it out at Blade??
