ok i know that the RIL Sage is coming out soon. im assuming its gonna be in the same price range as the current carbon fiber one. now i know that i love framelocks. that are my favorite. I also know that i distain linear locks, just cause ive had one that failed on me before, and other reviews that i have had saying they are weak. I figure though that i can try one out again, especially one from a reputable company. so which would u guys suggest? the titanium? framelock or the carbon fiber linear lock.

Personally, I think it's hard to find a company with a better Liner lock then Spyderco. They've made many little improvements on the original concept to make it stronger and a lot more secure. So I'd go with the CF Liner one for now. It will tide you over till the framelock one gets in.

However, if you really like Framelocks, and aren't interested in getting the entire Sage lineup, then it'd probably do you well to wait.

What knife failed on you?

I know how you feel about liner-locks; I once had a pre-LAWKS CRKT liner-lock that folded like a poker player with ADD. I stuck with Spyderco lockbacks until I discovered their Military about ten years ago. Spyderco knows how to execute a strong, efficient liner-lock so if the Carbon Fiber Sage interests you I think you will find it reliable. I just ordered one, and am waiting for it to arrive......my first new knife in about a year; the economy has has not been kind to my pocket-book as of late and discretionary funds have been unavailable to direct toward any new Spydeco for quite some time.

Incidentally, I've a hunch the frame-lock version of the Sage will be priced at about the century-and-a half mark.....appreciably more than the current Carbon Fiber, liner-lock Sage.

Both should be similar in quality. Am sure the RIL will be stronger, but unless you plan on doing independent destruction testing, that's academic. The failure point of the CF version would be well beyond the demands of any reasonable use. So it depends on what you prefer, and how long you're willing to wait. I'd lean toward CF over metal for handles myself, but your tastes may be different.

Keep in mind that, where Spyderco model releases are concerned, "soon" is a very vague word. Could be two weeks, two months, or two blue moons before the RIL version hits dealer shelves.

I plan on snagging the RIL if the production model is anything close to the prototypes but I also own two of the Michael Walker LL models, one that has not had the seal broken yet and one that I carry quite often.

I've used the Sage quite a bit and never had the lock fail on me. However my cutting tasks may be radically different from your cutting tasks, so if you feel that a framelock would be better suited for whatever those tasks may be, then it may be best to wait for the RIL Sage to become available.

However (and I could be 100% wrong on this), once the RIL makes its debut it can be safe to say that the CF linerlock verson will be discontinued. But, this is going into the collectible side of the Sage line...

I think i rember on the spyderco site someone said they will countinue to make the CF sage untill there is no more demand. I personally love the CF Sage i am going to buy another one and have it in case somthing happens to mine. I am not a collector i am a user and i edc my sage afterwork and on weekends . Cant go wrong either way.

Yes, that's correct. According to Sal, new versions of the Sage are not intended as replacements for prior versions, all will exist as long as there is demand for them.

I agree that you can't go wrong with either. I really comes down to a matter of taste in handle material and whether the OP "wants it now" or is willing to wait.

i can wait, not like i have the money RIGHT NOW. was just curious what everyone thought. and it was a buck knife that folded on my once. after that all linear locks lost their appeal to me. And i really like the carbon fiber sage. And the frame lock one. I think ill the get CF one now, and if i like it enought the RIL later on down the road.

I didn't know that---very interesting.

I myself would spring for the version of the Sage with the frame lock; however, I can't complain about the liner lock variant. Both will serve you well, and the current version has solid lockup. Do not be afraid of Spyderco's liner locks.

I picked up a CF Sage today and I have to say I absolutely love this knife! The CF is textured/bumpy and feels great in the hand. The lock seems like it will hold up and overall awesome knife, I don't think you can go wrong

My Sage just arrived today too. What a well executed folder ! It sort of looks like a Mini Manix that got left in the clothes dryer just a little too long.:) Love the handle design.... a bit like the Para-Military's , it's long enough to comfortably use with or without the choil. Also, this is the first knife I have owned with Carbon Fiber scales....nice stuff ! I think the Sage is going to make a perfect EDC for me.

Once again.....good job Spyderco ! :thumbup::thumbup:

hmmm im liking the sound of the sage more and more as time goes on. though i did just once again see the Native 4 and the Manix, now THOSE are knives...

I have two Sages, I like them that much.(in case I loose one)
Oh, I will get the Chris Reeve version as well, but I THINK I may like the CF one better, because I haven't been real fond of all metal knives in the past.
