Which SAK for backpacking?

I've used scissors to trim nose hair, clip a skin tag, shape moleskin, cut off panties, open food packets, trim fishing line, and so on.

Well, I've thought about using my awl to sew them back on :D :D :D
I've settled with the OHT as my woods MT. Its more of a constant on my trips than any of my fixed blades which see rotation among favorites. I also prefer carrying my SAK on a sheath. Since my SAK is always part of my woodsy EDC kit, I had a custom sheath made with a firesteel loop. Again, its just always with me so it made sense to integrate the firesteel loop with my SAK more so than to ensure every one of my knife sheaths had a firesteel loop (some do, others don't). Anyhow, belt carry of a SAK is a great thing.

No scissors, but I keep a surgical set in my FAK as well as jeweler (very fine point) tweezers. I used both in first aid situations enough times to rationalize dedicated tools for them and appreciate that these are kept mostly clean and sterile. The OHT does have tweezers, but I find SAK tweezers to be just barely usable and not strong enough to really dig stuff out of your skin.

After years of backpacking, I carried a SAK Classic sterile in a FAK.
I used for Moleskin and any other first aid stuff.
And a SAK small paring knife for cooking and cutting vegtables.
It would work for gutting fish, and weights nothing.

Since I was backpacking with a stove, I almost never used or needed a knife for 'woody' stuff
I also carried a small Opinel for 'in case' which is also very light but never used it!
Later I went modern and carried a Bucklite folder and never used it.

Now I would substitute a Mora #2 or a Mora 11675 The HighQ Allround Carbon instead of both the paring knife and folder and be happy with a better fixed blade.
They cost $10 and weight nothing

Ahh I thought that was the reason. I use duct tape. Best to catch the blisters before they start. If I feel a hot spot on my foot I'll put a length of tape over it and works perfectly.

Out of interest

Duct tape make your skin sweat and gets damaged skin even softer
Moleskin breathes and does not soften the skin

I think once you get the edge squared away, you'll find you got a lot of knife for $15 :D

Yep, I believe you're right about that... Only little thing left was to oil up the hinges a bit.. Caught the devil trying to get the awl opened...lol

I like the idea for the sheath KGD !! Thanks for sharing !!

The Safari/GAK 108 series are some of the most underated out there. With their dicontinuance, the prices are crawling upward. I do not have the Mauser yet but have read that it has the best saw of any SAK.

HighQ Allround Carbon

I bought one of those for ten bucks from Ragnar, great Mora - comfy handle, long tang and like all carbon Mora knives it takes an insanely sharp edge (I just stropped mine for a few minutes to sharpen the micro-bevel when I first got it)

A carbon Mora + a good SAK and you can handle most backpacking tasks.

 for the Wegner Evos with both saws and scissors ! Another combo is the LM Micra (I want scissors that are capable of everything from beards to toenails !) that has a permanent place in my FAK, along with your choice of the available large locking SAKs..(My personal choice is the 'german' OHT) since by now we can all probably agree that the SAK tweezers can't begin to touch Uncle Bill's...

That being said, I've got a LM Style on order that may have a chance of altering my whole basic cutting set....

What would we all do if we couldn't constantly tweak our kit ?? ;)

I'm with you on both knife and belt carry preference, but prefer to carry fire steel separate. Great combo that I carry almost everywhere.

I finally got the edge taken care of on my GAK, and man I'm impressed !! The hair almost jumps off my leg when testing it !!

I'll be making a sheath for it in the coming months for sure !!
