Which SAK...is BEST?

Hehehe, I couldn't help myself!

I like the classic!

love the SAK's. and i love the Vic Farmer. but, someone else said it best. the "best" is relative. it's whatever fits your needs.

for me...i carried a wenger handyman for years. that had everything i needed, but it had extras. i now carry a Vic Farmer. i find that i prefer the alox. i do wish it had scissors though too. but, it wasn't a requirement. requirement for me is the saw and the screwdrivers.

i personally choose the tinker. i choose it because it is small but has a nice variety of tools. i carry it for the screw drivers, punch and tooth pick primarily. i also carry it because it is not threatening. my main edc is a spyderco military so pulling out a SAK is often a better option that a 4 inch folder.

I usually carry a Tinker which is the Spartan but with a Phillips driver in place of the corkscrew. Definitely get the Spartan if you drink wine, or hang out with others who do.

I sometimes carry a Super Tinker which has the third layer that gets you very nice scissors and the hook. There is a "Super Spartan" (not its real name) also. The third layer makes a big difference on in-pocket comfort; the two layer versions are much less bulky. I carry a Classic on my keys primarily for the scissors.

The Farmer is nice.

Check out the Leatherman PS and the Wenger Swiss Clipper AT....both TSA-legal.

Very cool on the Leatherman PS! I've seen the Wenger Clipper AT and at first had a few thoughts, but concluded that I wouldn't buy a $20 clipper that added a few (to me) not too useful tools that would be taken care of in another better tool. I'd just keep my regular clippers in my toiletry bag and a knife/multitool checked... or maybe that Leatherman PS!

For EDC, my favorites are:

Spartan
Pioneer

It just depends on if you want celidor (plastic/nylon) or alox handles. Plus the spartan has a corkscrew. Both are thin, tough, and very useful.

Glad to see this thread. That other one rekindled my inclination to buy SAK's, and I have a Rambler on the way.

Are there any super thin models with the screwdrivers (phillips and flat), and a large and small blade on either side? My dad had one that finally broke after 20+ years, and I'd like to get him a new one if they still make one.

That link posted earlier with the search tool might help with your question!

Also,
I LOVE the look of those alox scales on the farmer. I've only ever seen the 'cheap' looking plastic ones which is what turned me off.

The SAK that I've carried for several years now is a Cybertool 29. Mainly for the bit driver and bits. The "missing" tools, such as pliers, scissors, file, saw, etc, I have on other tools that I carry with me, such as the Squirt PS4 (keychain), or Charge Ti (backpack),

Perhaps I didn't make myself clear. I've been searching for one of these models for the better part of 4 years now. As far as I've been able to determine, that model has been discontinued, or was a limited run for a particular company. This question was for people with extensive knowledge of SAK offerings, particularly rarer models that from the search tool, don't usually exist.

The other issue is that my dad wants the blades on opposite sides of the handle. The closest I've seen is the Electrician, and that doesn't have the phillips screwdriver, and the blades aren't on the opposite sides, etc. In fact, if you had used the search tool yourself and entered in the tools I mentioned, you'd have found out quickly exactly why I'm asking. I'm not some forum noob who doesn't know how to do an internet search.

I've had some success tracking down discontinued SAKs here: http://www.sakwiki.com/

-Climber
-Alox Soldier

Both great while we wait for the Alox Soldier with scissors to be produced :D

Think he'd like a Small Tinker?

Or a regular Tinker, Deluxe Tinker, Super Tinker?

Thanks Xtal and sqchram. The tinker has too many tools (he only wants those 4), unfortunately. He's quite picky, because he really liked that knife, and nothing else comes close. I'll look around on that wiki site and see if I can identify what it was.

After owning and using countless SAK variants, my favorite over the last few years has been the Explorer Plus. Its one more layer than you are looking for, but you can handle it. For me, its got just about the right combo of tools. I especially like the phillips driver that folds out 180 degrees like God intended, but the magnifier and scissor get plenty of use. Having the spare pen for emergencies is also appreciated.
