Im looking to get a SAK sometime in the possibly near future. There is so many to choose from though. I'll probally just go to the Victorinox store and play with a bunch of them.

Which is your favorite?

Sorry if this is a repost, but the search function isnt working for me :o

I'm with glockman99 (howdy glockman99).....the Deluxe Tinker. If you don't need the scissors, get the plain Tinker. I've had both and they are great knives.

There are almost innumberable variables.

If you want:

Simple use, good looks: Try getting anything with an alloy handle.

Frequent but not abusive, many tools: Explorer

Frequent, abusive: Tinker (At 20 bucks, you can afford to buy a new one often)

Not-for-carrying: Cybertool 34

That's my two cents. If only the Swisstool was two cents....

Overall, I would say that the Explorer is my favorite though I don't carry it all the time due to thickness.

Work: Spartan and alox classic on keychain
Off work bumming: Explorer and alox classic on keychain
Outdoor activities: Champion Plus (wally world) and alox classic on keychain

I've had a Ranger for years. The scissors eventually get to where they'll "scis" but they won't "sor". I warped the saw, but that was my fault entirely. It lacks a Philips head screw driver, which I'd like to have on it. Other than that, the Ranger is just at the edge of what I consider a pocket knife size. Any bigger and it would weigh to much and be too think. I carried a friend's Swiss Champ once, and I thought it would pull my pants down. I find a SAK's blade the easiest to hone to a razor edge of any knive I've ever had, and some of the tools are useful and durable (others are interesting, but fragile). So, I'd recomend the Ranger.

The next SAK I plan to buy is the Compact. Mainly because it is two slots (whatever the correct term is) wide and has a large blade, scissors, & corkscrew. I mainly carry the SAK when I'm traveling those are the things I use most when I'm traveling.

The full list of features is,
1. Large blade
2. Scissors
3. Bottle opener
4. Can opener with wire stripper and large screwdriver
5. Mini screwdriver
6. Corkscrew
7. Straight pin
8. Ball point pen
9. Tweezers
10. Key ring

I have carried the Explorer for almost 10 years now and it is still my fav. I have the climber and huntsman and champ and recruit and the list goes on and on. The Explorer has the phillips which is a plus, depends on whether you need the mag. glass or not. The pliers that come on the SAK are not the greatest in my opinion. The scissors are useful, but not for big chores. I have taken my SAK canoeing and rafting, hiking and climbing with never a bit of rust. No matter what knife I carry, I always have my SAK with me.

Glad to see that you're looking at V'nox. I much prefer them over Wenger. That being said, I'd go with the Tinker. It should give you all the options you would typically need without being too thick.

I picked up a Ranger recently. I use the small screwdriver on the can opener as a flat Philips.

Here's another vote for the huntsman.

Seems to be everything that I need in a package thats "just right".

Im not seeing alot of these on the website. are they discontinued?
Also what is the awl used for? and the hole?

The awl is used for many things! Punching holes in leather or plastic is a common one. The hole is there because you can use the awl, along with some "thread", to do some rudimentary sewing. You won't make Cinderella's dress with it, but you can make some improvised clothing if needed (say, caught in the bush), etc. I actually used the awl on my SAK for a lot of scraping, poking, stape prying, and other odd jobs that the other tools don't do that well.

As far as which one to get, it is best to write down what you want the SAK to do and what tools you'll need, and then buy the model that fits that description. When I chose my SAK, some tools I picked because I wanted them just in case (saw), though I knew I might not need them much. Also, I chose it to go with mt heavy duty folder (Buck Strider tanto) or fixed blades that I carry. So think of what other gear you carry too when making your decision.

Thanks Crayola, the awl sounds very usefull. I will make a list of what tools I would like and go from there.

Yeah thats were I was looking, I dont see some of the knives mentioned in this thread. I don't see the Compact or the Deluxe Tinker. I dunno maybe im just missing them.

Do a search on Google. Just go to "Images" and type in Victorinox and the two model names. You'll have multiple choices come up.
