Which SAK's have scissors other than the Classic?

I've had the SAK Classic in my car and one on my desk for yrs. When my father retired, he had a box with several cases of Company Logo'd SAK classics. They say "Raytheon & Hawk Missle".

I break one every so often and he just gives me another, but I'd like to find one with scissors and if possible maybe a phillips screwdriver (perhaps a little beefier). Scissors are primary, small blade secondary tool and the screwdriver is tertiary at best. I really need a small, portable pair of scissors w/a knife.

Come to think of it, maybe it's time to jump up to a mini multi-tool? I have an older version LM Super Tool, but I need something much smaller than that and the scissors are a must. Any recommendations? Thx for your help.

There is a model called the "Rambler" that has scissors, knife blade, small screwdriver/nail file, and small phillips(magnetized)/bottle opener/wire stripper. It also has the toothpick and tweezers. It is the Classic SD that you are used to with the addition of the small phillips/cap lifter tool. This is what I carry on my keychain.

As for a small leatherman, check out the Squirt S4(I think). It has the tools you are looking for as well. Don't confuse it with the P4, which has small pliers instead of scissors like the S4.

I suggest you take a look at www.victorinox.ch.
Furthermore the Leatherman Squirt S4 should suit your needs. It has scissors, a blade and a screwdriver.

Edited to add: didn't see your post about the Squirt, Hero.

If you need scissors and a philips driver, look at the Leatherman Squirt S4 and Micra models. Basically, they are scissors...with additional tools, like a knife, a few different drivers, tweezers, file, etc...

The RAMBLER rocks! It is my fave keychain SAK!! The phillips screwdriver/bottle opener is a great addition!!

Here's another vote for the Rambler, which in my opinion is the ideal mini SAK. However, I normally carry a full size SAK, which I find even more usefull. My usual EDC includes either a Cyber Tool 34 or a Cyber Tool 41, both of which have scissors (and lots of other cool stuff).

The Victorinox Rambler as suggested by others is still in the same size class as the Classic -

so the durability of the scissors is going to be the same as the Classic.

For a larger SAK in the standard 91mm size that has both scissors (larger) and Phillips driver - look at the
Super Tinker:

The Climber is also worth considering if the corkscrew is wanted -

where's the Phillips?
- well actually the can-opener's small screwdriver fits #1 & 2 Phillips heads.

Recently heard - Lowe's Home Improvement had the Climber packaged with Rally for $8.42 (but the Climber may be an "Economy" line SAK)

However the most compact 91mm sized SAK with scissors is the
Victorinox Compact knife:

compact - US model # 54941
size:91 mm | 3 1/2 inch
Large blade
Scissors
Hook
Bottle opener with can opener, wire stripper and large screwdriver
Mini screwdriver
Corkscrew
Straight pin
Ball point pen
Tweezers
Key ring
Toothpick

I've got a Huntsman and the nice extra feature on that is the saw, which works amazingly well, and comes in handy around the yard. No phillips though.

The new "Huntsman Lite" has a phillips, along with an led and all the other normal huntsman features. A Google search should get you there..

The Fieldmaster is the same as the Huntsman except has a phillips rather than the corkscrew.

Vincent,
Thanks for all the great info. I was hoping you'd share your expertise. You certainly know the models quite well. I like the idea of the beefier scissors found on the 'Compact' vs. those on the Classic. Do I have that right or are the scissors the same as the Classic?

Can you elaborate on the 'economy line'? Are there differences in materials or just cosmetic?

Best,

patrick

The Compact is substantially larger than the Classic and so are the scissors - here's a comparison photo I just took "as we speak" -

Remember that there is NO Phillips on the Compact knife.

There are two Victorinox Economy SAK lines that I know of - I think the Economy Climber is in this line:

VicEconomy2S.jpg

If so then all the tools are supposed to be as the regular full priced line - it's just the handles scales are of textured nylon and the logo is press printed (as opposed to actual embedded metal).

I have a pair of folding scissors made from an old broken Wegner SAK, just the spring and scissors pinned between two aluminum liners using the original rivets.

If you have a broken SAK and the scissors are OK, you can pry the handles off, file the rivets down a bit to disassemble, and reassemble discarding broken or unwanted tools, the rivets can be pinned with a hammer or by pressing them between the jaws of a vise, if the original rivets are too short you may be able to get some brass rod of appropriate thickness at a hardware store.

I see no difference between the economy and other lines other than the material of the handles, I feel the economy handles are a bit stronger though not as good looking.

Edited to add:

Vincent, great comments and pictures as usual.

Thanks for your input Don. Also, I couldn't agree more with that last comment ;)

Vincent, another very informative post. Appreciate all your help.

You mentioned that the scissors are your primary tool and that you want something compact. I think that the scissors-based minitool would be your best choice. You get a strong pair of scissors and a decent set of dedicated light-duty screwdrivers, including the flat phillips, in a package that is more compact than the 3.5" SAKs.

The minitools do weigh a bit more than you might expect, given their size. Also, some folks prefer the tweezers on the SAKs over the minitools. And, you would lose the can opener and large blade, but it sounds like those things aren't important to you. If you currently carry a Classic and regularly break it, you should try a minitool.

Just to clarify: I am using "minitool" as a generic term for the keychain-sized tools with scissors, such as the Leatherman Micra and Squirt S4, that others have mentioned.

My suggestions:
Leatherman squirt S4 (not the p4)
http://www.leatherman.com/products/tools/s4/default.asp
which can be had a Target for <$30 US
(it has a tweezers like a SAK)

Sog crosscut (I don't personally like this one..)
http://www.knifecenter.com/knifecenter/sog/crosscut.html
and for $17.00 US at
http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/ctd/product.asp?dept_id=1530&sku=75911&imgid=

And the Schrade 'Tough Chip'
Yes the tough chip is not as 'smooth' as the leatherman, but the scissors are bigger and I just got one at Dick's sporting goods (in store clearance) for $9.00 US. The tools are decent and they lock. Larger than the leatherman.
Take a look (online about $18.00 US is a low as I've seen.):

most multi-tools (either scissors or pliers) are pretty poor as knives.

Most earlier Leathermans I had (the displeasure) to experience had terrible actions - like the inability to open a single tool from the handle without other tools also opening -
man! is that CRUDE by today's knife standards -
seriously, who would want to buy ANY knife that opened multiple blades when trying to open just one! (and that was the at one time top-of-the-line SuperTool)

What patrickb (the original poster) asked for is a pair of scissors with a KNIFE.

A SAK is a KNIFE - with a folder action that is a worldwide benchmark standard - that others strive for.

Most multi-tools are either a pair of scissors or pliers -
with an excuse for a blade.

I had always wanted to carry a knife -
before the multi-tool - it had never occured to me to carry a pair of pliers.

I am a knife-person,
and not a pliers-person.

:p :D

Of course, YMMV ;)
