Guys - had Spydies forever and a day, but have never attempted sharpening on my own. Usually send back to Sal, and I do have a guy here who does 'em right without mangling them. But I'd like to do my own, regularly. Have seen the Sharpmaker and DVD - but is this the best way to go? I need 1) the right tool, and 2) the right instruction.

Any suggestions from you dedicated sharpeners?? Any special tips or tricks??

THANKS! Trying to keep my fingers intact....

I am by no means an experienced hand at sharpening, but I use the Sharpmaker with good results. The instructional video is good, along with the manual. The kit is easy to set up, easy to break down, easy to maintain. I think it's very much worth considering for the first-time sharpener.

The main thing though, at least for me, was to just practice and practice and practice some more. If you've got old kitchen knives or something similar then you can work on getting a steady, even motion without worrying about scratching up nicer folders.

Sharpmaker & DVD. Use the DVD first, twice. Then practice on a couple of old beaters.

The Sharpmaker really shines at maintaining a sharp edge. If you let something get really dull, it will take longer to bring it back with the Sharpmaker.

Go slow and don't use a lot of pressure. Use a lot of strokes instead. You should be fine. Takes practice, like any other skill.
