hey guys, im new to this forum, but I just ordered a spyderco atr stainless and was wondering what sharpener you recommend. I dont want to spend a lot on one, maybe between $30-$40 or so. thanks alot guys, love this forum.
P.S. i have a benchmade 960, that looks almost brand new that I want to trade for another knife, it's just to pretty im scared to carry it around and get all scratched up.

ditto what EricD said!!

And welcome to BladeForums. Be sure to check out the Spyderco Forum.

MODS!!!!!!

we should sticky this or something lik this cuz lik every month some1 has a question sharpening like this

I actually don't like having stickies. Forums with choke stickies, that take up half of the page sucks. It's good for newbs, but it's friggen annoying. Maybe a whole seperate section for stickies for sharpening and first knives, excluding maybe VG's threads?

yeah underraged! like what they have in the bali section where there is only 1 sticky post but everything is inside it

I like the idea with the sticky.

Anyways, here goes:

Sharpmaker

or

Sharpmaker

or maybe

a Sharpmaker

but if not a Sharpmaker I would suggest a:

Spyderco MF204 (which would be, you guessed it, a Sharpmaker).

hey thanks guys, i guess the sharpmaker is the winner eh. sorry about this thread, i didnt know that it was a common occurance. thanks again

the spyderco pro files are the way to go (the long ones) one med. grit and one fine grit in a nice leather case and they work well on serrated knives too

Welcome to Bladeforums.

Get a Sharpmaker. It will save your time, trouble, and money in the long run, as you learn to maintain your own knives.

Carry the 960 and enjoy the fact that you own and use a great knife. You don't have to use it gardening or scraping mud off your shoes, but you might as well have at least one dress or office knife.

Until you've put a scratch or two on a knife, it isn't your knife. :D

Hey! I like the sharpmaker, too. And it is the one that fits his price point, so it gets my vote there. Now, let's tell him what he can get for a few dollars more. After all, we have a moral obligation to try and get him to spend his money befor his wife does! (You are married, right?)

:)

In the $130 to $190 price range lives the Edgepro! It's something to consider for later. The Edgepro and Sharpmaker compliment one another quite well.

:)

As for the Sticky message, I agree with the "Choked Forum" effect that would have. I recommend ONE sticky message with a link to all the various FAQs. FAQs seem to be a lost skill from the days befor web-boards. When USENET was king, and email was all non-HTML. Can't say I wanna go back, but the well maintained FAQ was a right handy thing.

Yeah, BFC has a fair number of faq's in the knowledge base, but alot of people don't seem to be able to find it.

Keep the 960 for situations where the ATR looks "scary". Grab a sharpmaker or learn to free hand. (get some cheapies first)

I have a Gatco and a Sharpmaker, and I like both - but the
Sharpmaker will work with any blade, whereas the Gatco doesn't
work with small blades (e.g. smaller blades on a slipjoint, like
a stockman).

You won't regret having the Sharpmaker, even if you do go up
to an EdgePro later.

2 other suggestions:

1. Definately get the VHS that comes with a Sharpmaker when you
buy one new (in other words, if you get one used, make sure you get the video, too)

2. Spend the $20 on the VHS available from RazorEdge systems. It SHOWS you the preferred method of sharpening, independent of what system you use. One can read about something and learn, or, one can watch how to do something and probably learn more...

I would spend the money on Murray Carter's DVD . I think gives the best instruction on how free hand sharpen a knife and what a sharp knife is and how test for sharpness. :) And the sharpmaker for touch ups.
