which sharpener

The basic Sharpmaker kit is only good for touch-ups. Reprofiling will need the Diamond Rods.

The cost of the Sharpmaker and Diamond Rods is equal to the cost of the basic Edgepro Apex kit.

I've never used the basic Edgepro stones, but I hear they're good enough for reprofiling.

It's just something to think about.

Hey Capt Ron (or anyone else) -

Any online sources (or 1-800, or whatever) for getting Murray Carter's DVD? I did a quick "Google", but didn't find any. I hadn't even heard the name until reading your post.

I'm (philosophically) sort of an advocate of using rigs which ensure blade sharpening angles, but I'm still interested in eventually learning how to sharpen freehand. But, I've never encountered references to instructional material on how to freehand until seeing your post.

Thanks in advance!

edb Once you watch that video you will be not happy with testing a knife any other way but his three finger test. Even factory new spyderco knives do not pass his sharpness test. You can get the DVD at http://www.kellamknives.com/ that's where I got my copy but it is not listed on the web sight you'll have call them.
