Which Spyderco are you carrying today?

Just the other day, when I got my XHP Chief, and was reading about XHP being comparable to a high-hardness 440C, I thought to myself "Boy, it would sure be nice to see Spyderco's take on a low-alloy steel, heat-treated to their standards, something like 1095 or 440C", and here one is! What model is that, if I may ask, and what is Spyderco 440C like, in your experience, if you have got to use/sharpen it much?

The only "low-alloy" Spyderco steels I have are BD1N and G-2 Stainless, so I think that is the closest I will get to this. EDIT: Just realized this is a Chicago!

Thanks. It’s a Cat. I have sharpened it and it takes a real nice edge. I think Spyderco has changed the steel on the Cat though.
I have used it Hard and it holds the edge just fine.

I’ve been super happy with Spyderco BD1N in my old LW Manix2 and my Ronin2.

I have it only in some kitchen knives (two Spyderco Z-Cuts) and the aluminum PM2 and I'm glad that Spyderco makes these steels that are more friendly to sharpen. The PM2 sees use in work applications, opening boxes and tearing tape, but those Z-Cuts have seen my toughest use on the steel... definitely not bad! Not had any edge damage from normal kitchen stuff whatsoever and since these actually get left lying in water sometimes, the corrosion resistance is tested, and they do well.

No. I guess the light's not too good. It's one of the DLT exclusives that they sold a few years ago with dark red scales. They had them for the Manix & PM2 & I got one of each.
No, I am sorry, what I meant to ask was, "Did you dye that dark red, starting from tan?" but you answered that as well. Beautiful scales, I love that color. I ask, because tan is an easy change to burgundy.

Yeah, I’ve worn my Ronin2 IWB sweating my butt off in the summer and in the river many times, with no corrosion to speak of. Same with Manix2. I don’t feel like my sweat is very corrosive though. Even with M4/CruWear/Rex45, I have a hard time staining it up.

Fills the hand so well.
