Which Spyderco for wilderness and fishing?

BTW there is a passaround being organized right now for the Temperance 2. Its a great way to 'try before you buy' so to speak. Go to general and there's a thread at the top.

Thanks for the tip! I have looked at the thread. I can not join. But pictures say more than a thousand words. Many good pictures in that thread. I like the blade shape of the blade. The knife is great! Maybe I wait a while longer and buy Temperance 2. The price is a bit stiff and it´s way over my budget.

I have more or less decided to go with a Spyderco folder. I usually carry my knife in my pocket so really don't think I need to carry a sheath. Many of the Spyderco folders have the same blade length as any other survival knives. I've heard a lot of good things about the VG-10 steel aslo.

Can't really decide which of these models to buy:
Pacific salt (H1 steel), Endura 4 (VG-10 steel) or Stretch (VG-10 steel).

Please help me out :)

That's a tough one. I don't think you can go wrong with any of them. The Endura and Salt have a similar blade length.

I have a Pacific Salt and really enjoy it - it goes everywhere with me. Its a great working knife.

That said I think the Endura is a great knife too. If you're someone who maintains their tools you won't necessarily benefit from the rust-proof properties of H1 steel.

Possibly the Endura 4 in G-10 would be a great all round EDC. The G-10 is nice and maybe worth the extra $$$.

But you can't go wrong with any of them.

I have noticed that it is slightly different blade shape on the three different models. Do not know if it has as much practical significance.
Would you say that H1 is close to VG-10 when it comes to overall quality of the blade?

My thought was to combine a lighter folder with a heavy blade that is more suitable for heavier bushcraft tasks. Rock Salt for example.

I dont think there's much to tell them apart. The Endura 4 G-10 has a full flat grind though, which I think is a better option all round.

H1 is still relatively new. It has been getting good reports though. My H1 blade is full serration, so its a slightly different animal. Doesnt have to be sharpened as often.

I think VG-10 is plenty good enough for most things.

Bear in mind a folder has its limits for outdoors work. But you will carry it a lot more than a fixed blade.

Out of the three I would pick the Endura 4 G-10 for an all rounder. Sweet knife.

I know there are limitations for a folder in outdoors work. For bushcraft and heavier tasks I will most likely use an axe.

That's a good call.....

Phase,

I recieved my Endura 4 G10 and man what a great knife. The full flat grind is better, I believe, for slicing. Great for camp chores like food prep, decent skinner and other small chores. Probably some bigger jobs too, but I don't use my folders for "hard use" That's why we have fixed blades.

The G10 scales provide a great grip even when wet. The point is stronger than my Police model(a plus for outdoor use IMO) and the handle is relatively thin so the knife is easy to carry. Quality is top notch as are all the Spydercos that I've had or have. It's a great looking knife also. Anyone would love this blade. I paid, with tax, $107.

The Stretch looks like a great knife also. Tough decision. I don't think you can go wrong with any of your choices. Happy hunting!

Good to hear that you are happy with your choice. Nothing is better than that :)

I do not live in the United States. Spyderco is not very common where I live so I just have to take a chance on one of the models. But the Endura 4 seems to be good for my needs. Spyderco has so very many models to choose from. Almost too many in my opinion.

PM me for assistance on how to overcome the international obstacle.

Can anyone provide me with a photo comparison of Stretch, Delica 4, Endura 4 and the Pacific salt? Thanks!

Spyderco makes very good pocket knives in VG10 - a great steel. For a fixed blade for general use, I'd go with the Moran. For a fishing knife - I'd seriously look at the Fallkniven F2 or F4, or the H1 models from Spyderco. I really like VG10 or other hard stainless steels, and have no experience with the H1.
You really need more than 1......

I agree. I don't think you can beat the Endura for your first Spyderco...esp if you go with the G10 FFG model:thumbup:

The Endura was my first Spyderco bought back in the early 80's. It's still my go to fishing knife.

Do you think FRN is a bad choice? Save some money with FRN. I don´t like the foliage green color. I want black. Moran is nice, but I´m worried about handle. I think it look small.

Well "phaselock" please don't overlook Spyderco's great fixed blades. I did overlook them at one time but back around 2004 I got my first Spyderco fixed blade knife which was the first TEmperance model. And I've been a big fan of them since then.

The handle ergos on every Spyderco fixed blade I've used is just nothing short of perfection. I can't wait to get my hands on an AQUA SALT or the new Temperance II.

When I go on any outdoor endeavor I always take a couple of folders ( one standard blade, one Hawkbill blade) and then I always have 2 fixed blades ( one PE & one SE). And believe me I usually find work to justify taking all of them.

Nothing wrong with FRN. Slightly wider than the G10 version. The G10s feel better to me but the FRN has a good grip.

Fixed blade is probably the best choice for outdoor. But it is nice to have a small folder in my pocket. I think I need two :)
