Which Spyderco steel for my first Paramilitary 2?

Thanks winner, both are from RGT, not cheap but quality products for sure.

I depends on your sharpening skills. Sharpmaker is a must. S30V is a good start. And when you'll learn more about sharpening and find the edge holding a little low. Then its time for S110V. Best edge holding from all PM2 (unitll Maxamet will apear one day) Never have a problem get it scary sharp with sharpmaker. Its stainless so no need to worry about patina or rust. And for 150$ its a bargin. All sprints and exlcusive are 200 and more. Only M390 is 180$ plus shipping. If you are OK with Bentobox. I used to have one from the first run in 2012, and sold it. S110V is the best user IMHO.

... I would recommend starting with one of the s30v models. Probably the best performance value of any of them.

I really like the PM2 platform, but it never reached a 'cult following' with me like it did many others. Don't get me wrong, I do smile and marvel at it's design whenever I carry it, but there's really too much good stuff out there, from Spyderco and elsewhere, for me to have multiples of the same knife. (I do have both a Cruwear Millie and a Ti framelock M4 Millie, but they are almost completely different knives IMO.)

All the above is just a roundabout way of saying: Start with the basic S30V variant first; S30V gets maligned all the time, but it's pretty good stuff. Besides, the PM2 platform might not even click/jive/mesh with you...no use spending a significant premium to find that out. You can also/always resell your PM2, probably for close to what you paid for it, if you want to try something more exotic.

I went the other way here. I'm not a kool-aid drinker either. The color of the G10 or even carbon fiber didn't wow me. So the steel is my point of interest.

Not all special ones are $200, I just got a cruwear for $148 shipped from a place I probably can't mention since it isn't a forum sponsor. The s110v is great though and is probably the best deal imo.

The only model I have is the CPM Cruwear, which has been fantastic. I'd love to get my hands on the Elmax/foliage green one though.

Thanks for all the great info, I really like all the pics posted. I think I'm going to pick up the grey cruwear, I really like the scale color and it sounds like cruwear is a great steel. Thanks again guys looking forward to getting one in hand!

Great choice if you can find one!

For the type of use you described, S110V all the way if you can get past the blurple covers. Killer edge holding and stainless to boot.

My first Spyderco was the S110V......... then I bought a Raven2 to EDC/ beat on.

The S110V Blue knives are sooooo nice! You can really tell the difference in a cheap vs a nicer/$$$ Spyderco :P

i would pick the PM2/S110V,because even though its a regular production model, your getting one hell of a knife for your money!unless your really loving the sprint runs, this is best for its price with a grate steel, witch is why i got mine about five months ago,and you can always change out the scales with some after market carbon fiber ones, and bang you will have your own (sprint run) at a 3rd of the price..

To the best of my knowledge, I've owned every rendition of the PM2 at one point or another. I'm not really a collector though - I buy, hold for a bit and then try something new. They're fantastic knives.

The only one I still have is the Green scaled model in CTS 204P (C81GPGR2). It was a pretty limited run, the steel is fantastic and the color is handsome.

My advice would be to buy a base s30v model used just to be sure you like the knife itself before you go digging through the more exotic steels. People tend to buy more than one of these things (just look at this thread) and so I doubt you'll regret owning a pair.

If you insist on jumping into the nice stuff, I'd recommend heading over to Bento Box and getting the M390 model. It's an amazing knife and the collectibility (i.e. Resale value) should be excellent.

Unless you do a lot of cutting on a daily basis, i would go with s35vn, followed by standard s30v. S35vn is the easiest of the cpm steels to sharpen that i have experienced.

All of them, but you do have to start somewhere. When price is considered, PM2 in S110V would by my choice if I could only have one.

Good choice, with getting the Cruwear!

Post back, what you think, once you've had it for a little while
