Well I'm goning to be buying my first spyderco pretty soon, but i just don't know which one to get. I have narrowed it down to either a police model(with the g-10 handle), a civllian, endura, or para military. So what would be anyone's suggestions out of these sypderco's to get. My main experience with folders are benchmade, smith and wesson, kershaw, sog, buck, lots of chinnese knock offs, and cold steel. So I am a little curious about sperderco since i hear they have a good repuation and you can use zip ties and them to give a wave feature to the knife( something i did with my buck vantage).

you're already experienced with knives, i gather. might as well try for a flagship spyderco model instead of starting out cheap and basic. the paramilitary and military are as good as production folders go. you won't need to wave their thumb holes as they're big enough to open with gloves on. in addition to the police, the other nice seki city models include the caly series and the stretch. or you could try the taichung collaborations like the gayle bradley, the techno, southard flipper, or the sage series.

I would second the para 2 for a general purpose knife. The civilian is a cool knife, but not at all a good general purpose knife. What will you be using it for?

well i mainly want a large folding blade for edc( although i do have a edc blade), camping( i have fix blades for that at home but since i live on a college campus only folders are allowed so i have all my fixed blades at home), and as a back-up to my pepper spray( and i don't like to carry blades for this purpose, but i kinda have a need to now) since i have to walk around late at night( 9pm-1am).

did you get get the plain edge or serrated edge version of the police. And that's good to hear cause if its like a folding chef knife i could use it for kitchen duty as well in my dorm

I don't think that would be an issue where i live since there is alot of hiking trails in the area i live and if i have my backpack on i think most people think im just hiking though there some sheeple who are scared of my leatherman ps4. I am also very discreet when using a knife anyways, but any size folder is legal to carry here in california except in certain places such as k-12 schools

If you want a big spyderco folder I would highly recommend the military over the police, I just think it's a better, more ergonomic design (police is a bit too slim for its length) and carries incredibly well for its size. You get arguably better steel with the military as well. The military and paramilitary 2 are made in Golden Colorado if that matters to you where as the police is made in Seki City Japan.

However, if what you want is an edc knife, it's hard to beat the paramilitary 2. It's obviously substantially smaller than the military or police, but it's definitely not a small knife. More like a medium size knife with the ergos of a large knife. The compression lock is absolutely brilliant as well. If you're trying to soak up all that is spyderco, I think the para2 is THE spyderco.

With that said, my absolute favorite spyderco, and the knife that is considered by most spyderco fans to be the very best knife spyderco makes, is the Southard. It's not cheap, but in my opinion it is easily worth more than the cost of admission. It's made in Thaichung Taiwan (hint: spydercos most premium, high end models are made in Taichung), meaning the fit and finish is impeccable and easily on par with knives costing double it's price. The southard features a Ti frame lock, ball bearing pivot system with a flipper opening mechanism, and carpenter steels' cts-204p steel which is their version of the highly acclaimed bohler m390. All in all, high end handle materials, high end super steel, bearing system pivot tech, outstanding ergos and design thanks to Brad Southard, and world class construction and fit and finish thanks to the folks in Thaichung make for one of the very best production edc knives in existence.

the southard is a little out of my price range right now. I might lean towards the PM2 cause then i can use it for two things an edc blade and extreme emergency back up to my pepper spray, but i like the length of the police, but then again i would have to carry a second knife for smaller edc tasks. This is a hard descion to make cause if california allowned the carry of balisongs and fix blades if would be set right now lol.

Also don't forget the Ulize, which is similar in size and construction to the G10 Police:

I have a para 2, as well as a few other spydies and quite a few folders in general custom/mid tech, I find the para 2 in my pocket when not in a work/sheeple environment (then I usually have my small sebenza) mostly, it is plenty length enough for any realistic duty and would serve well as a backup to your pepper spray, if I could chose only one, the para 2 would be it....and oh yeah re-sale would be quick and easy if you got it and don't like it....
