I knew that he uses a harpy in the book and it looks as though it will also be used in the movie. If you were Hannibal would you choose the harpy? Which Spyderco would you choose? I obviously would choose the Wegner or Wegner jr. Better for skinning

I would say they picked the harpy due to the "sinister" looking blade shape. I wonder if Spyderco will see an increase in harpy sales? Is this really the kind of publicity Spyderco wants? I know that Sal has worked hard to keep Spyderco's image as a fine knife company that makes excellent tools.

He used a Harpy, and purchased a Civilian, and an unidentified 4" serrated Spyderco in Hannibal, as far as the book goes anyway.

Hello,

reading the book was actually what got me into knives. Before that I only owned a barely usable old SAK. Having read the book, I started wondering whether "Spyderco" and "Harpy" were the author´s inventions or if they were for real, and then the search engine quickly introduced me to the knife hobby.

So, I do not know if Spyderco wants that publicity, but at least in my case it has lead to the purchase of two Harpies and various other knives. Every day I appreciate using these fine tools for horrible deeds like opening boxes and blister packs

. The Civilian will hopefully remain a collector´s piece, though.

He also bought a drop point skinner, as I recall: probably a CS Master Hunter in Carbon V (Hannibal preferred carbon steel blades). Good taste, in blades anyway. Can't wait for the movie!

I'm afraid this type of publicity has the potential to be damaging in the long run, even though some people might take an interest in Spyderco due to the book and/or movie. Just remember how automatic folders and balisongs (not to mention "assault" rifles) were subject to restrictive legislation for no other reason than looking "menacing" (and don't forget this sillyness about serrations in airports). Unfortunately, there are legislators who make a career out of keeping the "sheep" in fear.
If I were Sal, I wouldn't be too happy about it - but then, there's nothing you can do, I guess.

I don't know, the Police model is awfully ironic.

Does any1 remember what Spyderco did the Bad musculine girl used to threaten Angela Basset in "Strage Days"? I think it was either Harpy or Police. It was probably the moment when I became interested in Spyderco.

It should have been a Wegner and a Catcherman. The Catcherman does a great job on butterfly steaks and jerky meat. LMAO

Do you mean Hannibal Barca, the Carthaginian general? He would have chosen a gladius hispaniensis had he the choice.

Pardon my humor, but this is one very tacky thread!

I think that the harpy suits Hannibal Lector well. He would definitely pick the SS version over the zytel or G-10 though. It just looks classier and he is all about class. In my opinion, the Harpy is an excellent utility knife and as Lector showed in the book it works as a defense knife too. As far as publicity goes. I don't think that Spyderco has anything to worry about. Afterall, look at what happened to the sale of Magnums after the Dirty Harry movies. I don't think that the publicity hurt. And as in the book, I think that the reverse S of the civilian works for him too.

When the book, "Hannibal", first came out, I almost bought it, thinking that it was about that Carthaginian general. You can tell where my mind runs.

As to whether Spyderco would be hurt of helped by his use of their products, from what I have seen of the American public's love affair with the character, I would definitely say that it would help. As H.L. Mencken said, "Nobody ever went broke underestimating to good taste of the American people."

Unfortunately, these are different times we're living in. Back when Dirty Harry was created, there was no strong antigun movement going on - with full media support - as there is today. Some of those gun prohibitionist groups and politicians - which are, in fact, opposed to the right to self-defense, whether they admit it or not - are not fond of knives either.
That's why I'm afraid that kind of publicity could be a problem. Hope I'm wrong, though.

True. True. I hope so too. I would hate to lose quality knives like Spyderco's. I have only begun to seriously collect them within the last 2 years and I have so many more to get! And there are so many more that I have heard about that I can't wait to get!

Jazzman,

I believe one thing we can do to avoid losing our Spydercos and other fine knives is join AKTI now, before the enemies of freedom start targetting those tools.
My wife and I are planning on moving to the U.S. soon, and we should become members as soon as we arrive (that's when I'll renew my NRA membership too).

I've spoken with one knife dealer who said that he started getting a lot of/more phone calls for the Harpy right after the book came out. I think a good number of people will want the knife just because Hannibal used it. And not many non-knife people are familiar with the Civillian. If they see that in the movie you can bet that a lot of people will want them, though many will change their minds when they see the price tag
wink.gif
(Side note: I wonder, if the Civvy is shown in the movie, if we will see knockoffs soon??) So potential knife knuts (ok, teenage boys) will buy more Spydercos after the movie comes out, I'd bet money on that. And I don't think anyone would not buy a Spyderco brand knife just because Hannibal used one. But will one of their mothers, after seeing that movie, decide that maybe people shouldn't have those dangerous weapons? And would that mother, maybe, bring it up at the next PTA meeting or whatever? A brief increase in sales isn't worth the negative publicity. I imagine that Spyderco isn't happy, and can't do anything about it.

Maybe us knife knuts will start to hear Hannibal jokes about our blades, since even some of the anti's are getting tired of the OJ jokes??

My dears,
here the question is very psycothic, but nice! Yes, if I was Hannibal I would really enjoy a Harpy, and of course the Civilian, for all the "flesh & blood" work to do. But I wouldn't forget the "safety" matter, and, without losing any touch of class, I surely would have in my left pocket a SS Native, and maybe a small serrated Cricket right on the back of my neck-tie. Being dangerous with class is always nice.

EX ALTO FULGOR

if its good enough for hannibal, its good enough for me.

thats why i carry a civilian.
well, actualy, i like the hooking potential of the blade and the hook for controling techniques, but america's favorite serial killer's endorcement has not hurt my oppinion of the knife.
