Hi all. Wanted to get some information if possible regarding the restrictions of carrying a knife in and around Thailand.

Am going to Bangkok and Krabi for my honeymoon this october and was planning to bring a Spyderco UKPK or a Spyderco urban in orange:

SPyderco Urban: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SP127GPOR

UKPK: http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=SP94GPOR

would I have any problems bringing either around? think both are a reasonable size and should not raise any eyebrows.

but would like to make sure

any information would be appreciated

Guille

P.S. also posted on the Asian and Australian forums. But wanted other opinions as well.

Just my opinion, when in the slightest doubt, head directly for plan "B".
It may come as a surprise, but most free and openly independant countries are part of the growing international ring of active trading countries. And thus one would find in such foreign domestic markets, some form of knife readily available to the ordinary man. It may not be a Spyderco that's on the racks but you can bet that there will be a knife suitable for your specific applications.
So you're on holiday, and you certainly shouldn't need to worry about small things like, "oops, there appears to be a frantic security check going on ahead of the que. Now, what am I to do with my prized Spyderco that's clipped on my waist band? Now, if only I had bought a cheap local knife for carry instead...". Sometimes the worst piece of junk saves you a bundle.

I have spent a fair amount of time in Thailand and my cousin lives in BKK.

I carried a Spydero Salt and EKI 12 pretty much all the time when
I was last there, in and out side of BKK with no problems.
I dont see you haveing much trouble at all with any Spyderco knife,
especially not with something like the Urban or UKPK.

Just try not to wear red or yellow T-shirts in Bangkok and you will be just fine :D

I hope you have a great time :)

I've traveled to Thailand on many occasions and usually travel with my SOG Seal Pup for bungalow/camp use and whatever folder is current edc around town.
While the Seal Pup is generally dwarfed by the locals machetes and bush knives I don't feel the need to do airports with anything scary big.
Although I did buy a Thai Darb at a local makers one trip and carried that strapped to my pack for a month or so. Never hassled.

Edit: Kind of missed the point there didn't I. Just got excited when I saw Thailand, can't wait to go back. ;) Take whichever you like best. Should be no problems.

I didn't get a remark on red or yellow T-shirts in Bangkok. Since my son is going there in few weeks (as a tourist) I would appreciate to know more - or is it some joke?

It was a joke (sort of)

I'm sure you have seen or heard about all the political problems there of late.
The two sides of that fuss are "red shirts" or "yellow shirts".
There is also a day (Monday) where every one wears yellow for the moon god.
(there is different colours for each day of the week)

As a tourist I doubt very much there will be any problems on that side of things.
Even if there is a protest while hes there its never directed at tourists.

Any hoo,

You need a yellow Salt for Monday, a pink Delica for Tuesday, a green Jester for Wednesday, an orange Mili for Thursday.......:p:thumbup:

They sell tables full of large autos in all the night markets. I don't think you will have a problem with anything Spyderco makes as long as you don't use it on someone. All bets are off if you get into an altercation with a local and pull a knife for any reason including self-defense.
