By the way, I'm new to the forum ;P

I live down in central illinois, which is basically in the country, lots of hunting, farming etc etc...so I think the cops are pretty cool about knife laws...

but what state has the most relaxed knife and gun laws?

I'm graduating from college soon, and I'd like to get a job somewhere where I have more freedoms.

Surprisingly, California has some pretty reasonable knife laws. My preference is ~4" folders, and I can legally carry one most everywhere I go.

Gun laws have a bad reputation here, and it is difficult to get a CCW. But, if you read the laws carefully, there are lots of "exceptions" that allow you to at least have a gun close at hand in an emergency. Lots of folks don't even realize this.

4" would be nice, but I'm talking about being able to carry around a nice 6-7" fixed blade non-concealed. I'm guessing you probably can in Alaska.

Gun laws are OK in illinois, you just can't conceal. I'm actually applying for my FOID card today. I'm gonna be getting a mossberg 590 for home defense, and maybe some light hunting. Hell, around here people shoot their shotguns off on new years day. It's soooo different than living around chicago. I'm personally glad I don't.

If you're working with it, hunting, or fishing, you could carry that in Illinois. I wouldn't bring it into a shopping mall, though.

Once your outside of the city itself, and outside of a few notably Democratic suburbs (Oak Park, the North Shore 'burbs, etc.), you'll find firearm laws very comfortable and relaxed.

I'm for sure not trying to encourage you to move to Calif...we have more than enough people here already. But, just for the record I can carry that 4" folder concealed.

Fixed blades have to be carried unconcealed. The only folks I see carrying a fixed blade in urban areas are "senior citizen" biker types. I guess it's part of the uniform???

My philosophy is to never do anything that will needlessly draw attention to myself, so a concealed folder is just dandy!

Illinois is one of the worst anti gun cesspools in the US.
The fact that they do not allow any citizens to carry, and have that Nazi-like FOID card is disgusting.

Thank you for this!

After looking into the gun laws in Illinois, I've been informed that they are on par with Nazi Germany! Especially the FOID card. There was a similar card that you needed in Nazi Germany, with almost the exact same stipulations and regulations.

Sheesh...I can't wait to get out of this socialist state now! Illinois is a boring state anyways. I've always wanted to move to Colorado.

I can't disagree with you. I lived in St. Louis for close to a decade and sometimes my job would take me over to East St. Louis, IL ... no worse cess pool outside of Gary, Indiana. :barf:

Missouri? I had (have) a concealed carry permit. If you are over twenty-one, valid driver's license and have no felonies that disallow firearm ownership - you can carry a handgun in your automobile (concealed, say, under the seat) without the need for a CCW permit.

I now live in Indiana but haven't sold my house in St. Louis yet. :( I have to cross the People's Republik of Illinois every few weeks. My CCW is worthless when I cross the IN/IL line and everything is sealed away in a safe.

I actually consider "the crossing" almost like a hostile territory.

Unfortunately, the mostly rural IL, populated largely by reasonable folk, seem to have most of their legislation dictated by the population center of Chicago.

which is completely insane if you ask me. What other states are run solely by a large metropolis?

There's chicago, and then there's south of Chicago. Nobody down here can stand our governor(or previous one's).

I heard a rumor that Chicago has the most CIA and FBI agents working undercover than any other major US city. Why? Because of all the organized crime. So not only is Illinois a police state, it's also a cess pool of organized crime. Oh wait, there's no difference.

NY for one ... sigh :(

New Mexico is OK. CCW permits are reasonable to get. And you don't even need a CCW to keep a concealed firearm in your vehicle.

My only gripe is that the automatic knife law does not contain a collectors' exemption as many states do.

+1 above.

As far as I can read into Mr. Levine's links, as long as you are not carrying a concealed auto, dagger etc. you're fine in OR. I've never had a problem other than with a few university sheeples...

Here in MN, Autos are not legal, but otherwise I can carry anything I want as far as blades with no length restriction. (of course the Twin Cities area might have their own rules) There is not CCW. There is a shall-issue carry permit- No requirement to conceal.

i split my time between nyc, connecticut, and colorado.

believe it or not, colorado has the most strict edc limit by almost an inch.

I was once driving from LA to Denver with a friend, and at 3am near green river we hit a truck tire tread in his relatively low honda civic, bout 85 mph. He couldn't swerve, but we heard dragging afterwards so we pulled over. The plastic undercarriage of the car was touching the ground like it was just bent down by the tread. He thought we should either call a tow or cut through the thick auto plastic and continue the drive. So what have I? Just my PE Manix to the rescue - cut through that sucker, stashed it in the trunk and kept going. So I'm assuming a burly 3.75 incher manix is well over the CO law, but I'm sure glad I had it. I'm not so sure an SAK would have handled that one...
