Which steel is the best for survival knives?

My current edc is made of 440C but I am wanting to switch to a high Carbon such as 1095,O1 or spring steel etc.I'm just worried that in the event of an actual survival situation a stainless blade could break whilst prying etc !!!!

Which steel is usually the best for a survivalknife?

This is an easy one: Any steel that reflects a good compromise between edge holding (not brittle!), and improvised sharpening methods when required. If you can't sharpen the blade in the bush, it will only be a dull boat anchor.

BTW, in my experience, Scott (Gossman Knives) makes some seriously good steel (no secret here) that is easy to sharpen in the field, yet holds an outstanding edge.

heat treating may be more important then what steel.

i'd rather have 440c w/ great heat treat than S30V that was treated poorly

all things being equal.....i like 1095 and A2.....with D2 close behind.
