Which Steel Is Your Favorite For A Folder?. . . .

I've been carrying a CPM 20CV folder for about 3 years now and have had really good luck with it. Holds an edge and fairly easy to sharpen.

Never tried M4 steel, but would like to.

Toughness in any knife is a good thing, but there has to be some point diminishing returns if you can't use the blade to it's potential because of the inherent weakness of the locking mechanism.

I’d love to see INFI in a Busse folder.

It can still take a wicked edge and sharpens in seconds.

I know there is countless steel options but INFI is one of the main reasons why I have invested in this brand for darn near 20 years. Also main reason I held back on purchasing the folder.

already have plenty other folders in various super steels.

All is speculation until we get the Busse Folder and see what the Busse heat treat is with AEB-L

Lets see how the folder does, we all have or have had other folders, lets actually use them side by side and see.

I am guessing the AEB-L will be great.

I have used a lot of steels in folders over the years.

The S30V in my Rat Trap works really well.

I love a lot of the different steels in the smaller fixed blades That Busse and kin have put out Elmax, Magnacut, AEB-L and others, in that order.
INFI is great for larger blades ...........infact the best I have USED.

lets get them in hand and see :)

so when are they shipping by the way :)

S110V. Stainless. Holds an edge forever. Hard to sharpen is the only minus but not a big deal if you know how. I carry knives in this steel all the time.

52100. Gets wicked sharp. Tough. Minus rusts very easy.

I know just enough about knife steels to know I don't know enough to have an informed opinion. I just want something that's thin and slicey, holds an edge well, is easy to sharpen, doesn't rust easily, won't chip or break, and doesn't cost too much.

Magnacut

Reasoning:

- It can do everything that 3V can, except for cutting a steel bolt when being hammered with a steel hammer. With a folder you won't normally do that (as the joints will fail before the steel anyway), so the extra corrosion resistance and extra edge retention of Magnacut worth being traded in, at the expense 3V's extra toughness (which is not valuable in the context of a folder beyond Magnacut's levels).

- Stainlessness is important in a folder, because it is difficult to clean inside the joints without disasembling. And rust inside the joints will affect proper foldability in time.

Note: I would have probably chosen M390 if Magnacut didn't exist. With Magnacut available, it beats M390 by a wide margin in toughness, while having similar corrosion resistance and very close wear resistance. Magnacut brings nearly 3V class toughness along with nearly M390 edge retention. And it's stainless.

At 60.5 HRC wear resistance of 3V and Magnacut are very close, while 3V is significantly tougher. Helps for instance, when cutting into a staple when cutting boxes, cutting zip ties, etc. I’ve broken the tip of a 4V folder cutting bamboo, for instance.

Just saying.
