Can you give a refresher course on which blade steel is best for the green horn knife maker doing stock removal. I have been using 1095. & ATS-34. I am hearing 1080 or 1084 might be easier. I cannot find a supplier for 1084. When it comes to 1095. Is HR or CRA best? How about 1080? Is there much difference between that and 1084? I see Admiral Steel has a supply of 1080. Thanks for the help. Fred:confused:

Aldo Bruno has 1084, look in the for sale section. It is better than 1080.

Edit to add, 1095 HR for forging and CRA for stock removal.

Since you are doing stock removal the ats 34 will be a little harder to grind than the carbon steels, but all are fine. If you are doing your own Heattreating the 1084 is the easiest. If you are sending them out for h/t then there is not much differance.
Learning to grind is hard to get right, just takes alot of practice, and then more practice.

Thanks, for the info. I take it I can do a search for Aldo Bruno & find what I need? I remember seeing some of your blades at the Blade show in Atlanta Don, and they were really great. Something to strive for. I do my own heat treating. I built an Indian George forge, but after my first attempt at cable damascus I am not sure my shoulder can handle it. I am going to try to forge a blade or two in the near future. Right now doing stock removal. I appreciate all the help.

If you have a forge and plan on doing your own HT, I'd recommend reading Kevin's stickies about steels. Admiral has 1080 in stock removal sizes at very good prices. Pretty much heat treat 1080 as Kevin recommends treating 1084. With the tolerances from Admiral, 1080 could be 1085 or 1079.

Everyone thinks that cable is an "easy" damascus to start with, it's not. If you want to make damascus use known steels and build a proper billet. Damascus without a power hammer or press is less than fun at best.
