Should I get this one:

http://www.lapolicegear.com/sthaaxewish.html

Or this one:

http://www.lapolicegear.com/stcrcraxe.html

Which one do you guys suggest for an "all around" ax.

Something I can take camping with me, something that can be used as a weapon and also something that can be used an emergency tool.

I like how the first axe has a corded handle, i dont see that on the 2nd one.

And I also like the 2nd ones blade(s) but I just dont quite understand how it works?

First one, I don't like how the blades are screwed on the second one.

But there is something about how those blades are screwed into the main head that that makes them indestrucable?

Thats just what I dont understand.

I also like the 2nd one because it does offer the blade on the back end, which can be useful for many applications.

Did anyone else get a suspicious website warning from the above posted site?

No, and I've spent a *lot* of money with LA Police Gear and they are an absolutely top-notch organization. Excellent products, great prices and fast service.

The only problem with them is they have so many great deals on so much cool stuff that they will suck your bank account dry. :D

#1 looks like a decent cutter, but the handle will be poor for extended use.

#2 looks like it has a nice handle, but the blades dont look like cutters.

If you want a ax for cutting wood, get a Wetterlings. They work great.

My opinions, since you asked for it:

- Anything can be used as a weapon. Any axe will be pretty devastating, ASSUMING that you have any idea how to properly wield it. An axe would certainly be pretty far down on my list of things I'd choose to use as designated weapons, however. Again, unless you are trained with one, it seems it would be much easier to take an ax away from someone than a gun or knife.

- As an emergency tool, I personally don't consider them to be the best choice for the average person. I see a compact saw being of much more use and much less dangerous; in an emergency situation, when you are under stress, in danger, tired, cold, hungry, etc, the LAST thing I want to be doing is swinging around a big, sharp and heavy hunk of metal. I see it doing more damage than good; an accident with an axe could cause you to lose a finger if you're lucky or a limb at worse, and that's not something you want to contend with in an emergency. Get a large knife and a saw instead.

Exactly what sort of "emergency" do you forsee requiring an axe, anyway?

- Neither of those are in stock, just in case you didn't notice. ;)

Absolutely.

Go use a hammer or axe with a wooden handle for a few hours and then go use one with a nice fiberglass and rubber coated handle. ;)

I have been wanting a #2 for exactly 4 years now but noone offered to send me a dis-assembled one (long story).

#2 is a crash axe with particular focus on the impact bits (S7 and 2 types of bit shape) ability to disperse the impact forces and is claimed to be indestructable.

Useless as a cutter (cause it ain't sharp to cut a overripe tomato, I'm not kidding) it's mostly focused on whacking at items/surfaces that are hard or which can normally condemn sharp blades/axes if used to whack on them.

You can sharpen the edges but I think the hardness is not right and it's more set for toughness. Still it's pretty cool.

But I just don't like #1. Don't know why, I just do. Try the K5 or RMJ forge offering or wait for the Busse Axe to finally come out (ain't kidding, it's due I think cause it has been years).

Neither is a good "all around" axe. A good all around hand axe can split small wood. That means a wedge shape and no bolts in the way. You can buy a far superior all around axe for a fraction of the cost -- which may be a downside for some.

As to whether these are good weapons or win the Zoom Zoom Award, I defer to my betters.

these are more novelty items than useful tools, imo.

ive seen them advertised as entry tools, as in warrant service/swat entries. a hooligan and sledge hammer are proper entry tools.

i had a similar axe made by a different company. while kinda cool, could't think of any use for it, so i sold it.

they aren't going to be good for camp use or splitting wood.

i see no application as an entry tool or practical application as a weapon.

Skip the Strider and try one of these... I mean, if you gotta have an Axe....

I suggest the ranger crash axe, if you can find one--only about $150 compared to the Strider, and one piece design, in S-7 steel.

The other posters are correct, the Strider crash axe does not really have an edge--it is literally less sharp than a butter knife. I guess it is more as a breaking, not cutting instrument. It is hell for stout though. I guess if you needed to dismantle a stone hut, it would be the thing to have.

Here is a youtube video showing how a crash ax can be used to make an air scoop in your car hood.

Soo....I'm I the only one who is a bit bothered by the fact that the second one, does not/ is not supposed to, have an edge ?

-Feel free to impact any surface. (Sheet metal, glass, concrete, tarmac…)
-The Edges are not intended to be “sharp”.
-The heads are supposed to be able to move. (It’s the cantilever system).
-Its supposed to make that rattle sound. (It’s the cantilever system).
-The impact bits are made of S7 and coated with black oxide. They are not stainless.

That would be a bit of concern for me personally, before I considered how well it splits wood.

If those 2 were my only choices, I would go with the first.

i'd be bothered by it aswell ;)

Seems to be a good middle ground between those two.

How is it over all?

Who is it made by and how much does it cost?

So this is a much better all around axe?

Camping, suvival, defense, emergency situations whatever?

Started out as a SOG Fusion Hawk. The Wooden handle cracked first swing and I sent the handle back. While I waited, I had on of my buddies turn this Ti-Handle down for it. I have been using two (2) years now with excellent results. That means when I swing at something, the something breaks not the hawk. I have used it a bunch and I couldn't be happier. SOG did send me a new hawk with another wood handle. I just recently gave it away to a friend who is going to make an aluminum staff for his. I wanted a Strider or a K5 or a Crash Axe. But since I've had this done, it's all I'll ever need....
