Which Tanto Folder Is Best?

This question is about Tanto folders only. If you could have one tanto folder for everyday use, personal defense, and a carry knife which one would it be? Consider things such as durability, ease of opening, edge retention, weight, etc.... Personal defense and use as a carry knife are of particular interest to me.

Thanks for your responses!

I don't know all the Tanto folders available, but I own a Buck Strider and it is one heck of a knife.
Way over built is the only way I can describe this knife. Check it out.

That' s a pretty broad range. Production, handmades, or customs? Of course no single model will "do it all". But the latter would probably closest satisfy your needs listed. The only tanto folder I' ve carried and used with any regularity is the now discontinued Benchmade Tsunami in plain edge.

Hi Bimmer- You should look into Emerson's knives. He makes some real nice production folders with tanto blades, great all around users. There is an Emerson forum within this forum or you can go to his website; www.emersonknives.com

Enjoy, Donald.

If your looking for production, then I would have to say that some nice ones are the BM Stryker, and the Spyderco Lum.

I don't care for tantos, but I would choice the large tanto Sebenza for everyday carry.

I'm not fond of tantos in general, which is probably why I like the Benchmade Stryker better than most.

I don't know all the tanto styles available, either. I did buy an Outdoor Edge Impulse a couple weeks ago, and just love it. It has a modified tanto blade, a terrific pocket clip and a very useful blade design. All in all, it is a lot of knife for the money, and the state of manufacture is excellent.

I've got two tanto folders- Microtech miniSOCOM auto and REKAT Pioneer. Both I recommend highly. The REKAT is truly a hard-use stout folder with that Rolling Lock. And the miniSOCOM has MT's usual great fit and finish.

My vote goes to the Microtech SOCOM. The fit and finish is better, and the edge is easier to maintain than a chisel grind.--OKG

MY preference for Tanto Folders ...

SOG Arc-Lock Titanium Handle Partially Serrated Vision (my number 1 Tanto Style Blade Knife -- for it's overall quality, ti handle, and Arc Lock!)

Benchmade Partially Serrated Stryker (For it's style)

Cold Steel XL Tanto 50/50 or Gunsite Folder (For Overall Size)

MicroTech SOCOM M/A Tanto Partially Serrated (For Blade Material and Style)

I really like my Sebenza Tanto Large and Spyderco Lum Tanto, but what I probably use most is my XL Gunsite folder.

Okay, where's glockman...?

My 3rd choice would be my Cold Steel Extra-LARGE plain-edge Tanto Voyager. (Do you see a common "thread", here?.

The state of manufacture is excellent? I heard that they were made in Taiwan (ain't nothin' wrong with Taiwan though). Maybe Taiwan should become the 51st state.

EMERSON SOCFK!!!!! For self defensive use, there is no knife that deploys faster!! It's even faster than a MicroTech auto! The wave ROCKS!!!!! And it's only $150. I own two and plan on buying more.

My second choice is Emerson's waved CQC7B, 169.99 from Emerson directly only. I don't know if they still have any left, it was a limited run.

Third is the CQC7B or Tanto SpecWar. For $90 you can get a 7, and the SpecWar is the SOCFK without the wave.

All blades have chisel grinds which are easy as hell to sharpen, are 154CM steel at 57-59 Rc and really stay sharp for a looooonnnnggg time.

You won't be disappointed.

Don't overlook the CRKT Carson M16-04 for both quality and price.
