For me... I was shown how to open a slip-joint knife "properly" by my Scout Leader.
Use the dominant hand on the blade for the most control and swing the blade away from all fleshy parts (blood zone).
He had to break my bad habit of using my left hand to open the knife and I've been doing it "correctly" ever since. :D

I wish there was a spot that just said yes. I saw your comments and the other comments on the other thread and as a righty, I hold the knife in my right hand and open with my left. However on occasion, I have held the knife in my left and pull it open with my right thumb as well. Of course holding the knife in the left for a right open, has me more in an offensive position as the knife is now pointing down sort of in attack mode.

Left thumbnail, handle is in my right hand, ready to use. Generally, with the blade edge facing downwards.

I'd say whatever feels safe and comfortable is the right way.*

*Except for the way Mike does it... @knifeswapper

that has always freaked me out. waynorth waynorth did discuss and show me once during a rendezvous that as long as you dont slide your finger, youll be ok

I love Mike, and have the utmost respect for him, but I swear watching people open knives his way gives me the willies. ^^^ as mentioned above, yeah, as long as you dont slip you wont cut yourself. But I keep my edges scary sharp and I don't feel confident that maybe the blade lets go just so, or perhaps I'm not paying really careful attention, and then I'm running for a rag with my thumb in my mouth trying to keep my blood off the carpeted floor.

Held in left, blade up, open with right thumb, pivoting away from left hand!!
Oh... so Charlie was John's Scout leader? I think we found both people that do this! :D I love this forum.

Same. I love and respect Mike. I still think it's a bad idea to open a knife that way.

Very nice to know it is not just me. When I started in traditionals, I had a moment of doubt where I thought I was opening them incorrectly:oops:

For knives that have a stronger pull (even 6-7), I hold the nick with my left nail, blade pointing down. And I use my right hand to pivot the handle out and open. It puts less stress on my nail, and allows me better control since I am right handed. I much prefer pinching.

I've just been opening my knife over and over again, perplexed by this.
I thought I had life's most important basics sorted out and well understood.

Okay, so sometimes on secondaries I get cute and use the index nail of my left hand to open a nail nick that's facing away from me.

According to John and his Scout Master Charlie... Hickory n Steel is opening his knife like a righty!
I'm a lefty, so I usually use my right thumb nail opening the knife upside down then adjust my grip.
