Left thumbnail, handle is in my right hand, ready to use. Generally, with the blade edge facing downwards.
I'd say whatever feels safe and comfortable is the right way.*
*Except for the way Mike does it... @knifeswapper
Mike does do one thing correct, he uses his right thumb nail.Except for the way Mike does it...

that has always freaked me out.waynorth did discuss and show me once during a rendezvous that as long as you dont slide your finger, youll be ok
For me... I was shown how to open a slip-joint knife "properly" by my Scout Leader.
Use the dominant hand on the blade for the most control and swing the blade away from all fleshy parts (blood zone).
He had to break my bad habit of using my left hand to open the knife and I've been doing it "correctly" ever since.![]()
Oh... so Charlie was John's Scout leader? I think we found both people that do this!Held in left, blade up, open with right thumb, pivoting away from left hand!!

Same. I love and respect Mike. I still think it's a bad idea to open a knife that way.I love Mike, and have the utmost respect for him, but I swear watching people open knives his way gives me the willies. ^^^ as mentioned above, yeah, as long as you dont slip you wont cut yourself. But I keep my edges scary sharp and I don't feel confident that maybe the blade lets go just so, or perhaps I'm not paying really careful attention, and then I'm running for a rag with my thumb in my mouth trying to keep my blood off the carpeted floor.
Very nice to know it is not just me. When I started in traditionals, I had a moment of doubt where I thought I was opening them incorrectlyI love Mike, and have the utmost respect for him, but I swear watching people open knives his way gives me the willies. ^^^ as mentioned above, yeah, as long as you dont slip you wont cut yourself. I'm a lefty, so I usually use my right thumb nail opening the knife upside down then adjust my grip.
