Which to choose?

After hearing so many good things about the peanut, i have decided to go ahead and try one. I was just browsing the internet for one when i noticed Rough Rider makes a Gunstock Peanut. At this point it's a toss up between a Case Chestnut Bone CV peanut, and a Gunstock RR peanut. I really can't decide on which one. Should i bite the bullet and go for the Case, or go with the inexpensive Rough Rider? Inappropriate Icon Removed

if you are not sure if you like the pattern yet, then buy the RR.

There's some wisdom in that.

For some reason, the peanut is not for everyone. Although why is beyond me.:D

But maybe until you're sure you like the feel and cutting ability of this little pocket gem, maybe do try the RR. That way if you don't like it, no huge loss.

But... the RR won't give you the real feel of a Case 'nut. The Case's coming out these days are better than ever. Plus, if you don't like something about the new knife, send it back, and Case will make it right. My faith in the folks at Bradford is very high. High enough that I'll make you this offer;

Get the Case chestnut bone CV 'nut, and if you don't like it, I'll buy it off you for what you have in it, including shipping. So you won't be out anything. I can always gift it to a worthy person if you don't click with it. All I ask is that you give it a real trial and carry it for a bit, and use it.

I'd definitely go with the Case.
I'd also avoid the dice throwing smiley around here.

Wow thanks alot Carl !!! I really appreciate the offer. I really am not sure on the pattern, being i've never owned such a smaller knife of sorts. So i am leaning towards the RR, and if i like it, buy a Case. Sound like a good idea?

It sounds like a good idea to me. I got sucked into the peanut craze for a very short time, but it didn't take long to realize that I wasn't happy carrying something that small.

They are nice knives and a lot of folks are happy with them, but if you are not convinced that it is the patter for you, I think that buying an inexpensive one to carrry for a while is probably a good idea.

I am going to say that the Rough Rider peanut (particularly the checkered gunstock version) is going to be hard not to like. You will need to carry it a few days to become accustomed to the idea of a knife that small, but odds are good that you will really like it after you get used to it.

That Chestnut bone CV that has been mentioned is a beautiful knife and well worth what you would pay for it. But, you may be totally satisfied with the Rough Rider. And that's okay.

I believe that's what i'm gonna do... I only wish RR had a line of knives with carbon steel.

I have to say that the edges on my Rough Rider congress are holding up better than expected and I don't think you will be giving away that much to the CV.

IMHO I would spend the little extra $ and get the Case. Heck with an offer like Jackknifes, you can't go wrong. If it was an expensive knife, I would agree with trying a RR to see if you like the pattern first, but it really won't cost much more to get the real deal....

Not knocking RR's, just sayin...

Gotta agree with Mack, that particular smilie doesn't really fit in well here in Traditional.

Go with the Case. All the recent Case peanuts I have seen were of excellent quality: great walk and talk, fit and finish.
My first American slipjoints were 3 Case knives, all made in the late 1990s. I was very disappointed with all three and avoided Case for a long time.
Last year I bought several recent production Cases (mostly peanuts) and I am very happy with them.
Make sure you won't get in trouble in your school: most schools have zero tolerance policy towards any knife! It is not worth getting expelled.
The peanut would be an ideal after school little knife for most non-food related cutting chores you might encounter: envelops, strings, boxes. It is also a great pocket jewel and conversation starter.

I don't carry a knife to school, although i wish i could. I feel so weird without a blade on me!!! I don't ever realize how much i use a pocket knife until i don't have one on me. Anyway back to our original topic, the RR is somewhat tempting, cause it's cheap, but i know i will be more satisfied with the Case.

Hi,

I like RR's a lot. I think they are awesome values, particularly when you are testing out a new to you pattern.

But, they aren't a Case CV bladed Peanut. Get the Case. Even if you don't care for carrying it, you should have one if only for your collection in my opinion. And who knows, one day you may learn to love the Peanut. Heck, it took me almost 40 years!
