Which tool steel do you prefer?

+ absolutely my exact thoughts.
Of the steels you list, I have blades in both 1095 and D2.

I love 1095 because it takes a razor edge with minimal effort. Doesn't hold it all that long, but it gets SHARP. Great for when you are away from major sharpening tools.

I love D2 because, while it takes a LOT more effort to put on an edge, it will hold that edge through a long day's work. GREAT for when you have a lot of work to do during the day, but are not far from all your sharpening tools to restore the edge when it eventually does get dull.

In my career as a Toolmaker I have used about every steel in existance at one time or another.
D-2, a World War I era die steel outshines them all in fact in the cutting/ sliceing arena.
Because of the material's abrasion resistance, it is a VERY ,VERY good knife steel.
Of course, D-2 constructed blades are just a tad more difficult to sharpen and it's high Chromium content gives it a high degree of rust resistance.

please give me composition of sr101. tks. also in service rockwell.

SR101 if I'm not mistaken is another name for 52100 carbon steel. Kind of the same way Cold Steel called 0170-6 ( from Camillus, the maker of their blades at the time) "Carbon V"

It's a very good bearing steel that has been around a long time used in some very good knives over the years.

Swamp Rat supposedly has a very good heat treatment that gets excellent results from the steel. I'm not sure what RC thay run it at.

Just about any steel chart lists the composition for 52100. If you have trouble finding one ( A.G.Russell, Spyderco, Benchmade have excellent ones on their websites) please let me know and I'll post it for you.

I'm not posting it now as a look through a good steel chart is a good time consumer I find enjoyable. Good luck.

i've had great luck with 06 with rockwell 61.have'nt heard it mentioned here before.only been a member since 29 june.round rock heat treat near austin did the blades for local maker.similar to 01 but carbon rates 1.4 to 1.6.long edge retention & not brittle.4 knives since 1982, all have been great.edge retention nearly as good as s30v.
