Which types of blades you consider to be basic to have?

Beater: ESEE Zancudo/Avispa, RAT I/II

User: SAK alox Pioneer/Farmer, Spyderco Delica 4, Case Sodbuster, GEC Farmer

High End: T.A. Davidson or Tony Bose customs.
 
At first what knives you choose are all about what you think will be useful and "need" based. You fill that void and then you need a whole lot more. :D

Actually, I have always been a big proponent of the Vic SAK of your choice or several. A good modern that is modest in price and very useful are the Spyderco Delica and Endura depending on what size you like. If you are an outdoorsy type, probably pickup up a useful fixed blade like a Kabar Becker BK-16/BK-17 or ESEE 4. You don't need that big honking fixed blade for much of anything... but that never stopped me from getting more than a couple. Pick up a reasonably good machete for you "big knife". From this point forward, the ride gets a lot more expensive.
 
Basic knives you should have:
Fixed blade
Slip joint
Lock blade knife
SAK

That should get you through about anything.
