Even though there is a money difference between the CS trailmaster and the Tom Brown Tracker knife, which would would be the better choice? For out in the bush

My first choice would be neither, but of the two, I'd gulp take the Trailmaster.

I have yet to handle a "wilderness survival knife" I would actually take into the wilderness. They strike me as so many breeds of jackalopes.

After reading many pages of archives, I'm not so sure I trust CS anymore. Seems like all too often, one of their blades gets by with virtually no heat treat, and it snaps like a stale cookie. And this I find out after buying several. Hope I got good ones.

May be irrelevant anyhow, as the Trailmaster seems back-ordered and the supply of "Carbon V" in jeopardy.

Given the choice between the two, I'd go with the Trailmaster. The Tracker design makes me dizzy.:D IMO, too much on it. I like straight forward simple designs.

Even though I'm not a big fan of Cold Steel, I'd go with the trailmaster in a heartbeat. People have been using and designing knives for many millennia - the old designs have passed the millions and billions of hours of testing by our ancestors. Stick with old designs and you won't go wrong.

Tom Brown just let his ego get in the way having the good sense to stick with the trusted designs of our ancestors:

"The genesis of the Tracker Knife began during an interview between Tom Brown and a journalist over twenty years ago. In the course of the interview, the reporter asked Tom which knife he considered to be the best for survival. Tom thought about it for a minute and responded that the perfect survival knife did not yet exist. "Why not?" the interviewer asked. "Because I have not yet designed it," replied Tom.

You couldn't have said it any better!

I replaced my Tracker with a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp. Of the two choices, I would say Trailmaster.

Of the two I would go with the Trailmaster. I had a recon scout (smaller trailmaster) and it was a pretty good knife. However these days, I would go with one of my busses or swamprats and my small barkriver Fox river knife as a light chores/backup..

Between the two choices, I'd take my SAK.:D Seriously, wait a minute, that was serious. OK, of the two, I'd take the CS blade.

Why those two models in particular if I may ask? There could be better choices if you fine tune your needs.

Thats like, would you rather be drawn and quartered or beaten to death.... Ok, I guess not quite that bad but close.

I guess I would go with the Tracker just for the peace of mind the quality would bring me.
An entire Tracker would do me much more good than the half a Trail-crapper I'm likely to be left with.

NEVER TRUST A COLD-STEAL.

How sorta PC of you.

Does tracker equal TOPs version only, or can we broden the defination to the WSK degin in general. If so Ill take a Beck or Linger, if not Ill take the trailmaster :thumbdn:

trailmaster! ease of use for close in wood work, sharp point for fine work length for chopping/slashing /fighting/stabbing. balance is way much better.
just my 2 cents ;)

Tracker if there was no other choice, TOPS stuff, while being a little obtuse sometimes are undeniably well made.

If you have not decided and want a large blade with a good pedigree a Fallkniven A2 is hard to beat.

Gentlemen please , cold steel makes exceptionally fine blades .
If someone said they would take mine I would say fine ! L:O:L
