Which would you choose?

Where did you find one at? I haven't seen any for sale yet.

I picked up the (and held both) Kulgera at American Flag and Cutlery in Ventura, CA. They got the knives about 2 months earlier than they expected them. The 950 Rift (which they still have) was a partially serrated, black coated model. That one was # 279 (I think) of 1000. I have just started a thread with poor quality pics of my Kulgera if anyone is interested.

I think the Rift would be my choice. Hand filling handle, no weird cutout in the scale, doesn't look like an Ares gone wrong

I'd do the 930 it doesn't have the black coating on the blade that will wear off with 2 uses.

One for the Rift. Benchmade's S30V has bad memories for me. But, their 154CM is one of the best IMHO.

The Rift for me also. I really like the looks of it, just wish it were more in the Rukus 610 size, but that's just me and big folders. The overall shape of the knife is very pleasing to my eye, but I have been known to favor the dorky at times!;):D:)

Do you have any blade designs like the 950 already? If so try the 930.

I have a 921, which is similar to the 930.
I never thought I'd like a modified Wharncliff or drop point until I finally bought one. Now I really like the design. I find them much more versatile than a reverse Tanto.

I try to be really discreet with knives in general. The fact remains that many Americans have become frightened little sheeple.

I actually have certain knives that I carry in certain environments. Some I can carry anywhere. Others, like my 610 Rukus, I carry in a more selective manner, hence, they don’t get carried as often! I have the great luxury of having more than one nice folder though.

With that in mind:
Do you ever think you will pull this knife out in any ‘proper’ type of public setting, i.e. wedding, office, church etc? If so, the 930 design is much more ‘acceptable’.
The 950 design is paramilitary, like it or not. {Especially in black}
The 930 is more of a ‘Gents’ knife.

I have found I can flick a much larger blade without raising eyebrows, if the knife is really classy and expensive looking. On the other hand, I can open a ‘tactical’ folder, with a smaller blade and see a more nervous reaction sometimes.

Maybe this whole deal doesn’t apply to you. But if it does, the 930 is the one you want.

Did I mention you’ll really like the blade design on that one?:)

Hi bearcut,I'm glad you brought this up(different situations).I have mostly tactical(sheeple scary) folders & very few gent folders.I'll usually carry my BM710 or my S30V Leek at work to open packages, emergegy hose fix, or tie down the trunk on my cab for those people that don't believe in traveling light(another story..lol).I've never(yet) got a scary look with the leek.I have with the 710.I limit my carrying of the ZT0200 (my current favorite) when I'm outdoors & anticipate heavy cutting chores. If I brought the 0200 to work?!!...forget it,the SWAT team would be dispatched & before you know it I'd be pasted all over the 6 o'clock news with the headline "KNIFE WEILDING MANIAC CABBIE...etc:eek:".
As far as blade shape prefs,I really like the spearpoint for piercing chores & the reverse tanto resembles that the most IMO.I really like the Wharncliff design too. They(blade designs)all have their place, depending on what they'll be used for.
I'm going with the 930 for now, because it's more sheeple friendly & classier looking.I'll know I'll be getting the 950 down the road though. It's a shame I have to base my knife purchases on the sheeple factor, but that's an unfourtunate reality I'm gonna have to live with.

iono, jtr. unless I'm horribly, horribly mistaken, the rift seems pretty much like a 940 with G-10 instead of aluminum scales. the PE is satin finished, and fortunately not any more tacticrap than the 930. I really love the blade shape of the 940, and ordered a rift just because I've been wanting a 940 with G-10 or micarta since I bought it.
you COULD always go ahead and just get a 940. the blade shape you like, S30V steel, and green handles that aren't going to scare anyone.

Thanks for the input Din.I really like the looks of the 940,but I can't stand aluminum or SS handles.IMO,They'd get too slippery if they got wet or slimy,as opposed to textured G10 or micarta. That's why I'm selling my Shallot.I have a Byrd series Crossbill(got it under $20) & I just love it,with the exception of the SS handles.I couldn't imagine using the crossbill for SD.I'd probably slip out of my hand at the first site of blood, like trying to hold onto a fish under water.

P.S. What does iono mean?

iono = I don't know. :0) like that old Oreos commercial, kinda.
I haven't had any problems with my 940 getting too slippery when it's wet; the anodizing adds a nice texture and there's really good jimping on both the top and bottom of the knife. feels very secure in hand. it's really, really light, too, and carries pretty flat. if you haven't handled one, see if you can make it into a knife shop that carries BM before you finalize your decision, pick one up and see if you like it.

Thanks for the info on the 940.I'll have to put it on my long list of "tryers before buying".Now the hard part is finding a place in my area that carries benchmade.

I would go for the 950 rift... It looks much more comfortable... And i strongly prefer the 154cm to s30v... It seems to hold an edge much longer for me...
Matt

I'd do the 930 it doesn't have the black coating on the blade that will wear off with 2 uses.

The 930 is really speaking to me, and as Jim says, coated blades seem to wear very fast for what my knives are used for.

My new 950 is set to arrive via UPS tomorrow. I like the 940 Osborne so the new 950 is logical to me. The reverse tanto appeals to me. I also like the 555HG mini Griptilian.

The 930 is a much nicer looking knife.

The 950 looks a bit more "tactical", which really isn't for me. I also really don't like the blade profile, or coated blades either.

attention everyone complaining about coated blades: the 930 comes with the OPTION of a coated blade! with serrations! tacticool? no, TACTI-AWESOME!!!1! the 950 comes with the OPTION of an uncoated, plain edge blade. I know it'd only been pointed out a few dozen times already, and thinking makes the gears burn, but try to pay attention.

I'd do the 930 it doesn't have the black coating on the blade that will wear off with 2 uses.

I highly doubt that the coating on Benchmade blades, one of the premiere folder manufacturers, wears off in 2 uses...sounds like mindless bashing to me...

(I do buy mostly Kershaws however...the DLC coating on my Blur has held up to hundreds of heavy-duty tasks over a year as an EDC without a single mark or sign of wear. :D)

To address the subject of this post, I prefer the 930...cleaner lines, all-around better look...

Ray :)

Actually, the older coated Benchmades had a teflon coating that held up very poorly, and would wear considerably in a single period of extended use. That may have changed, but I know where people may be coming from with statements like that.

The 950 looks too much like a mall ninja knife to me, clunky ugly lines, kinda cheap looking actually tho I know it isn't. The 930 looks cleaner, the lines flow better, it looks like it should cost what you are going to pay for it. The 930 isn't as likely to get a negative reaction from people who see it either.
