I'm seriously considering the going to one knife setup. I'm thinking I'd like one knife to grab every time I head out the door to go fishing, hiking, camping, basically anytime it'd be me and Mother Nature for whatever reason. I'm thinking a Kydex sheath with a Maxpedition pouch on the front lashed down w/paracord for firemaking stuff, compass, fishing line/hooks, ESEE arrowheads? etc. Here are MY choices so far:

1. Fallkniven A1
2. ESEE 6 w/serrations
3. Bravo 1
4. Busse/Swamprat something
I'm kinda ruling out a Mora type knife due to the fact of no batoning capabilities (although I love them)
5. ???

Which would you choose if you could only choose 1? Are serrations that important in the wild? Would a sawing capability on top of the blade make this a perfect knife?
I'm hoping somebody will say something to sway me one way or the other. I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here. These are my choices.

In the size range you seem to be suggesting, I would (and do) pick my Busse Boss Jack LE with no choil. If the cost of the Busse were a concern, I'd go with the ESEE or a Swamprat.

My Bravo 1 was a tough knife, but the edge retention wasn't great. I used it as a work knife for a couple of years because it could take abuse, but the edge didn't stay sharp for very long when I used it. Easy to sharpen, though, but I imagine that is why the edge retention wasn't great..

I don't like serrations for an outdoors knife, and I have no use whatsoever for a saw on the spine of a knife.

Busse SFNO or ASH-1 .220" hands down!!! Agree w/Skrapmetal in that if cost WAS an issue then I'd go Swamprat and then ESEE...

I would have to sway you toward the Fallkniven A1! That knife is so versatile it is like a good pair of jeans that you can wear to a date or on a hunting trip!

Busse CABS if you can find one, then the Boss street, then Boss Jack, then the Rodent Solution, then ESEE. I have spent a year looking for the same set up and have settled on the CABS as my one and done blade. I am waiting on the Custom Shop as I wanted larger slabs on the CABS, but the blade size, geometry and metal are perfect. I am very impressed with INFI and SR101's ability to stay sharp and sharpen up easily with a strop or ceramic rod. My RS is a razor all the time. I am seriously sharpening challenged so this is important to me. I can get it sharp at home with the Works Sharp, but fail miserably in the field. The strop is easy and even I can't screw it up if I pay attention as it removes the need to maintain a perfect angle with the flexibility of the leather. Think of it as a really slow belt sander. I have not handled a RMD as I do not like choils and consider it a loss of cutting edge in a blade of this size. Really no need for a choil until the blade is over 7" IMO. If The Swamp offered a choiless RMD I am sure it would be on my list. Any of the your selections is worthy, these are just what suit my needs. 1. Hunting - cleaning animal 2. Ranch work- take constant abuse as an improvised tool of all trades 3. General camping- creating tinder and moderate wood working.

My one knife set up is a Busse SFNO LE in red and black G-10 with a Chuddybear sheath. The reason being that besides being a beast of a set up, it's purdy.

I love my CABS, and it has seen more use than any of my other knives since they were released, but for a one-and-only-one knife I like a little more blade length.

Busse or Swamp Rat for sure with the ESEE running second, My go to set up is a Busse SAR-6LE with a SAR-3LE piggybacked. I would stake my life on them!!

are you also bringing a saw or axe with you for wood processing? if yes, then can't go wrong with any of the 4 - go with the one that fits your hand the best. ergonomics is very important and everyone is different! if you're not, depending on your area, i'd recommend some type of machete/golok/parang/etc. instead as your one knife. it's always easy for people to say they can build a proper shelter or chop enough firewood in the winter with a 6" knife, but for those who actually tried it, they won't use it again unless they are really forced to.

Fall A1 or a Rampless Bravo 1.

But to be honest - the are all a little too large for me. A Rampless Gunny is usually my carry if I cam going to carry a BRKT.

You can't go wrong with the ESEE 6, but I'd go plain edge unless you plan on cutting a lot of rope.

I can appreciate your choice to "narrow" it down to one setup but I'd seriously consider making it a 2x knife combo. For a quick reference.... if you check out Ron Hoods video where he makes a figure 4 trap (youtube) you can see where he really makes a great use of a large/small knife combo with the different tasks at hand.

From your list, for me? The handle of the Falkniven is way too small.... I don't own one but a customer sent me one a couple of weeks ago and while it's a nice knife.... the grip is tiny and with you having the ESEE-6 on the list... FTW there's no comparison here. The other numbers are nice knives too.

Serrations? You don't need them and I really don't like them.... however, ESEE's serrations are the best I've seen/cut with as a buddy of mine has them on a four and they're impressive.

Sawback? to answer your question it would not make it a better knife... on the contrary it would render it a p.o.s (imho)

Maxpedition pouch? No, not when there's better options out there for the same price that do a better job.

My favorite 2x knife combo (and what I use) is the ESEE-6 and Izula I or II..... but I like them all in the same setup and with the addition of a pouch, firesteel holder etc. it perfectly fits the criteria you listed and is setup to handle ANYTHING.

This is the sheath they're housed in, the only thing missing is an external firesteel holder:

Here's a 3x view shot of the setup:

A setup like this really "disappears" on a belt and you'll almost forget it's there. The addition of a firesteel would look something like this:

The real beauty of this firesteel/holder setup is that you've got: Navigation (compass), Fire and Tinder completely covered outside the pouch and there's still plenty of room inside. Of course they could just be put inside the pouch too.

ESEE AH-1 Arrowheads? Got that covered too with a flat piece of Kydex that sits in the tin:

I think the AH-1 is a little "gimmicky" but by itself is a great SERE tool stashed away... which I think is more along the lines of what ESEE was thinking. Some guy's use them as a striker for their firesteels too.

You could always have a pack mounted setup for just the larger knife in your combo and throw the Izula in a neck sheath or a simple belt sheath:

Probably a little obvious that I like the 6 alot and the warranty (not that you'll ever need) is great and I've even used that to encourage guy's to really use/abuse their knives..... get out and use 'em. Here's a pic of mine from last years mushroom foray's, I use it to pry up "shrumping" mushrooms and also to shave mud, junk off of them too. I'm also stripping mine the old fashioned way....... by using it;)

Hope this helps,

On that list, Busse SAR, or maybe a SR Ratmandu.

Not on the list. Brian Andrews Bushhcrafter. It has the scandi grind you loved from the moras and the beefiness of a much bigger blade.
(It's the knife that's on the top of the list right now, for me. :D)

I'm pretty impressed with my Bravo 1. My holds an edge nice and touches up easily. The A2 steel is tough. My companion knife is a Swiss army soldier.

Of course any of the above knifes are great.
