We all talk about whiskey here, but does anyone drink whisky?

Here's my Favorite Irish Whisky.

And it only costs in the range of Sheepdip.

Someday, I hope to try the famed JW Blue, but my budget doesn't quite allow that yet...:)

Whiskey vs. Whisky? I'm still learning to tell the difference. Whiskey is a general term, Whisky is Irish, right? For me, I like Scotch. Dewars 12 year is pretty tasty stuff for blended. Laphroig (single malt) is super ultra mega awesome booze and isn't super expensive. I think it's around $40 a bottle. Worth it!

Good ol' black label Jack Daniels is plenty tasty stuff as well. But that's bourbon. (still a whiskey) JW Blue isn't worth the money. I can't tell the difference all that much from Black label. Save the money and buy a knife.

You should only drink whiskey straight. Only pussies mix it with anything.

Mmmm, now we're talking :D

My usuals are normally Maker's Mark or Knob Creek. If it's a broke week, then I'll get Jim Beam Black Label. For scotch, my favs are Lagavulin and Cragganmore. If I have some extra cash, then it's Glenfiddich Ancient Reserve.

Man, you guys got my mouth watering now. Only one more hour of work to go :(

Mmmmmmm. Ten more minutes and home sweet home :) Sadly, I dont drink whisky. It has always been tequila or beer for me :p

Nothing wrong with Tequila either ;) If we're talkin tequila, my vote goes to Patron Anejo. Damn, I need a drink :(

whiskey usually makers mark, jim beam, early times totally cash dependant when I walk in the liquor store. Ever so conveniently 2 blocks away. Here lately its been
cheap beer and everclear. Leaves me more knife funds and still gets to the gone like right now:cool:

Irish and American are Whiskey. The stuff that the rest of the world makes doesn't rate the "e." Scotch and Canadian are just "whisky," as is the stuff they make in Japan and Wales. (According to the Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, it's spelled "whisky," but most American distillers go with the traditional "whiskey" spelling.)

I don't much care for Scotch. The blended stuff tends to be flavorless, and most single malts can be pretty well replicated by urinating on camp fire ashes. Smoke and dirt for the flavor, and urine for color. I'm pretty sure that's really how they make it. The Macallan is a notable exception. Darned good stuff that.

Not much of a fan of Canadian either. Generally inoffensive, but insipid. Crown's OK, but nothing special in my book. Probably good for mixing with Coke (for people who like that sort of thing).

For Irish, I like Black Bush from Bushmills. Sadly, I did not find that Bushmills' Single Malt Whiskeys (at least the 10 year old stuff) lived up to my expectations. I could have sworn I was drinking some run-of-the-mill blended Scotch. Very sad.

What I really like is Bourbon. On the rocks. Jim Beam Black, Rebel Yell, Wild Turkey 101, and a bunch of others. The overpriced upscale bottlings tend to be pretty good, but for the most part not significantly better than cheap stuff like Rebel Yell, IMO. At under $25 a bottle, Evan Williams Single Barrel is an excellent value among the premium Bourbons. But my current favorite American Whiskey (when I can find it) is the 18 year old Sazerac Rye. At about $40 a bottle it's a little pricey by Bourbon standards, but well worth it.

Actually, Jack Daniels technically isn't Bourbon; it's Tennessee Whiskey. The main difference (and maybe the only difference) is that Tennessee Whiskeys are filtered through charcoal chips before going into the casks (the "Lincoln County Process"). Bourbons aren't.

I completely agree. Unless you like it some other way. Whiskey should be enjoyed however the imbiber finds it most enjoyable. If that means warm and straight out of the bottle, good for you. If you like it a teaspoon of water to "open it up" as some Scotch fetishists insist, that's fine by me. If you like it with a bit of ice, you like it how I like it. And if you like it mixed with Coke, that's cool too. As long as you're a chick.

Pigs Nose Scotch is the way to go.

I had several johny walkers last weekend in a taste test

White, Green, Blue, Red and black, I think. I am not an expert on any of these, but I can tell you that my two favorites where the Green and the Blue.

I'm a big fan of Islay scotches. Laphroig, Lagavulin, Oban etc. But the one I've been enjoying lately is The Peat Monster from Compass Box. Anyone who likes it peaty/smoky will love this one...

A purist will tell you that bourbon only comes from Kentucky. JD is from that other state and thus ineligible.

Taken from here: http://www.straightbourbon.com/history.html

Straight Kentucky Bourbon is to blended whiskey what a demarcated wine is to ordinary table wine. It takes its name from Bourbon county, Kentucky, once the major transshipment site for distilled spirits heading down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from its ports were stamped with the county's name, and Bourbon and whiskey soon became synonymous. Today, 90 percent of all Bourbon is made in Kentucky, most of it in Jefferson, Franklin, Nelson, and Anderson counties, the heart of Bluegrass Country.

As with French-appellation wines, there are strict laws governing just what a Bourbon must be to be labeled as such. For example, at least 51 percent of the grain used in making the whiskey must be corn (most distillers use 65 to 75 percent corn). Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years in new, white oak barrels that have been charred. Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor, add sweetness or alter color. Though technically Bourbon can be made anywhere, Kentucky is the only state allowed to put its name on the bottle. And as Kentucky distillers are quick to point out, Bourbon is not Bourbon unless the label says so.

Therefore, some very fine American whiskeys aren't called Kentucky Bourbon. Many look the same, and some even taste very similar, depending on their production style. Jack Daniels, a Tennessee sour mash whiskey, however, is charcoal-filtered, which many experts say gives it a different character. But up to and after the charcoal filtering, the Jack Daniels's production is much the same as any other Bourbon. Gentleman Jack, a superpremium entry into the whiskey field, also doesn't carry a Kentucky Bourbon designation. George Dickel is another highly rated Tennessee whiskey.

Love the stuff, but last time I had it was at a company party. I had a whole bottle. Blacked out and my boss ended up stealing my car and driving it to a coworkers house so I wouldn't drive home. Very long story, or at least so I have been told :o
