Anyone have any on-line leads on where to get plastic rescue whistles?

I've been checking the local Wally World - but they only seem to stock metal whistles.

The NRA is selling a nice survival kit with a good whistle, signaling mirror, BlastMatch, and tinder in a $20.00 waterproof hard case - all for $12.xx (IIRC) + shipping.

Campmor sells a couple of "survival" whistles.

A Google search ("advanced" search) for "whistle whistles" will get you MANY choices PLUS threads that discuss which work well.

Using "Search" here at BF for "whistle OR whistles" will locate info on characteristics and sources.

Good hunting!

The Wally World in my area always keeps the FOX 40 in stock all the time.Try looking in the sports dept.(soccer, hockey, basketball etc.)

Try Backpacking Light
http://www.backpackinglight.com/cgi-bin/backpackinglight/acr_emergency_whistle.html

They carry the ACR whistle this is a flat light weight whistle that is much louder than my Fox 40, and easier to blow. They sell them for $8.99 for a pack of three, and they use free shipping. I have three and I am going to order some more in a few more weeks. They are ideal for Altoid tin kits or any place you want to stick small items.

It would not be too hard to objectively test some aspects of whistle performance. You'd need a uniform air pressure source and a DB meter. That would handle eveything except the ergonomics of the whistle. I wonder if it's already been done. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

I have both the ACR and the Fox 40. They're both loud and easy to blow. I also have a Jetscream whistle that came with my NRA kit. It is good too but I like the Fox 40 and ACR better. The ACR fits nicely inside small kits because it is flat. Mac

Looked on Google. Not much at all.

The maker of the Storm Whistle claims it was tested at the Central Institute for the Deaf (It does exist. St. Louis) and found to be much louder that the unidentified competition.

Unquantified testing is reported at www.oldjimbo.com/survival/whistles.html. The author also found the Storm Whistle to be loudest of those tested. At least he Id's the competition.

A couple years ago the county police were giving away flat whistles that had a red led light built in the end. Pretty sweet - I snagged them away from the kdis after their novelty wore off. I'd love to find something like that for sale. Anyone seen anything like that?

I went to Google and searched LED + whistle or whistles. Good Grief!!! Red lights. Blue lights. Flashing lights. Rotating lights. Just take your pick, J-B.

Did you check the boating supplies?

Every Wal-Mart I have ever been in had several signal whistles in the boating stuff. I just bought a nice "pealess" one last week, blaze orange with orange neck cord, $1.46.

The storm whistle is without question the loudest whistle on the planet by a large margin. It is bulky however. The Fox 40 is a decent tradeoff of size and sound.

Check in the outdoors section of Walmart, they should have the four in one tool with whistle, compass, thermometer and magnifying lens for only $2.99 or so.

Don't look for 'em in the camping section. Definately look for them in the boating department. I just bought a Storm there a couple of days ago.

Those look great! But it looks like those whistles are made just for the kit? Is there a place to order just the whistle?

Good kit, whistle is terrible however. Maybe mine is a dud but the regular Fox 4o is much loader but bigger, and no you can't get them outside the kit is what I understand.
