White Cocobolo?

I got a good sized chunk of cocobolo from a specialty woodshop in Indianapolis as a Xmas gift.

Funny thing is it is the normal cocobolo color, but then also about half white. I'm not sure what the white part is, maybe the inner part of the tree? Does anybody know what it is and if it is good for handle material? I think it would look awesome, but wondering how durable it is.....

Thanks

I've used desert ironwood that had sapwood showing to good effect. It's plenty hard enough and adds some unusual eye candy.

great, thanks guys. I think I will give it a try with the white and brown for the handle. I'll post the knife when I get it finished.

I've made a cocobolo handle that had some of the sap wood in it. It was partly normal and partly sap. I thought it would look nice as a contrast but it didn't stay very white for long. It got dirty and darkened a little.

I've used this on quite a few knives. I love the contrast between the dark rosewood and the white of the sapwood. The place that I used to get it in ohio always called it Cocobolo Rosewood. Here are some photos of the latest one that I made from it, to give you an idea of how the contrast looks on a handle.

Not to highjack your thread but
Scott.....You should have puts some pins in that handle,Thing could fall off.

**Horrible joke drum roll** :p

One thing about that sapwood, I've only had the experience of using Desert Ironwood with sapwood , that part seemed less hard than the ironwood and would actually accept sealant which in turn made it harder.

Might keep that in mind when finishing.
