I am in process of scaling a small skinner with a White Linen Micarta with a layer of red to give a stripe effect.
As this is only my 2nd attempt at this, and my 1st with a drill press, belt sander and scroll saw, I did not expect what is going on.
Now, my workshop, although not even close to white glove clean, is not filthy.
After pinning and gluing the scales, I am now shaping. I used the belt sander and some drum sanders to shape it close. I am now sanding the final shape.
What was once sheet white is now dingy gray. See pics.
Please note that the top layer is the protection layer it was shipped with. It sands down to white. In fact, I got TOO ambitious on a small piece and sanded it down too far and the red layer was a dark patch under the white. It had a dent in that piece anyway, all the way down to the 1st red layer. Also, the bottom red layer is to simulate a red spacer. I know, I'm cheating, LOL.
Also, under the green tape is a surprise that I will show when I complete and post the work log.
after 1st belt/drum sanding
After shaping with sand paper. Getting dingy.
The small piece is the original block after cutting with coping saw. See how white it is.
Is there a way to clean this without the linen soaking in the dirt accumulated?
Can it be bleached without ruining the red stripes?
I have not finalized the shape, so I can still sand off the dingy part, but just handling it and some metal is being polished too (which gives a gray dust over to the white).
So, if there is a way to clean this that has worked for you, PLEASE tell me what it is before I ruin this piece.
