This would be the hard way, but you could get some black cotton cloth and some white cotton cloth, layer it together on wax paper with fiberglassing resin put a weight on it and let it dry.

Or get white micarta with black layers in it,as you grind the black will show in patterns.I believe Sheffields carries it.

will it char black with a hot iron?

If it does, seal it with super glue to stabilize it. you might end up with an interesting grip texture.

You could scrimshaw the pattern onto white micarta.
