I realize that this is probably not the most appropriate spot for this post. So, this will be the last one, and I will move it to another location from now on. However, this is pretty much the only area of BF that I hang out and know everybody. So....just one more before I move it along.

A long time ago, I fell in love with the blade shape of Swamp Rat's HRLM.

Not for an "everyday" use type of knife. I like my bushcrafter for that. But, because of the size, and the belly, I wanted it for my dedicated hunting/skinning knife. But, still be able to do much more beyond that too.

However, anyone that knows me knows that I despise coatings. Also, on this size knife, I really didn't want a choil. Especially one as oddly sized as this one. I also felt it was a bit thick for a dedicated hunting/skinning knife.

Of course, I wanted to change the handle shape, and "wood" is always good for a hunter.

So, this is what I came up with, in cocobolo. Creatively enough, I call it my "Whitetail Skinner."

Slight hand swells on this one.

Love cocobolo. This is not oiled for photos. This is the finish I put on.

The lighting is tricky with the finish. But, I wanted to try and show the high flat grind I put on.

Thanks to another local knifemaker, I am getting my "finish" details pretty well down. No more small scratches.

The secondary bevel is convex, super polished, and of course, super sharp!

As always, I appreciate input. But, I think I am going to have a hard time making modifications to this one, unless for good reason.

I really like this one,Brian. I too have a Howling Rat and a HRLM. The choil bothers me in either size. Love the knife. Totally bombproof! But,just a little too thick for a knife this size for everyday practical use.
What are the diminsions?
Thanks,
Alex

That's an excellent knife! I might put on an extra inch of blade length, but I see nothing else worth changing. I'd go with micarta handles, but that's purely personal.

Brian, that's one of the most beautiful knives I've ever seen !I love it,man !!!Awsome !

man.. that is a cool looking little knife Brian... i really like it... love the handle...

are you going to be selling those as well??

Thanks all for the comments.

It is funny, I don't measure things :D I draw it up the way I like :D So, this is the first time measuring it.

Blade from handle to tip: 3.75"
Handle length: 4"
Width (from edge to spine at widest point): 1 9/16"
Thickness: 1/8" I was debating between 1/8" and 5/32" for the longest time. I really like this one, but I will still probably grind out another thicker one for comparison.

are you going to be selling those as well??

Yes. Just a matter of when. I need to play with this one a bit more to make sure I don't want to change anything (thinking not at this point). Then, I will either get grinding, or get CAD drawn up to have the waterjet cut.

Hi Brian that really turned out very nice. I just love your thoughts on the blade length. 3.75" is my all time favorite blade length for my smaller knives.

Great job on that knife.

Bryan

Brian, that is one sweet design, nicely done. Can't see much to change, the lines on this really work.

looks nice!

very nice finish there. everything looks even and i like the satin finish on the metal bits.

if i were to change anything, it would probably be to make the plunge (the line between the flats and the grind) a bit sharper, instead of soft like you have it. but that's pretty much a cosmetic thing, so it isn't a real issue.

I don't think there's anything wrong with posting that for comments. It fits in just fine on this part of the forum. At least I hope there's nothing wrong with it, because this is where I intend to intro some of my stuff, too.

Nice work, by the way! Simple, utilitarian and good-looking. What's the steel, and what finish did you use on the cocobolo?

I especially like the detail shots of the spine and underside of the handle. It can be a pain to get a nice straight finish all the way around a full tang, you did a fine job
