Whittler?

My Brother was gifted this from our Father, a flea market find. Looks like a wedge back whittler with a nail file. No tang stamp. Thought I'd share and see what you guy's thought it might be.

That sure is a neat knife. The bone looks awesome and that's a heck of a wild looking shield. Very unique.

That's not the remnants of a stamp in the second pic? Very slight...or my eyes are playing tricks on me. Neat knife. Never seen a shield like that.
 
Interesting knife, no doubt that the shield is unique, but being split spring an swell center and blade combination is also very appealing.

Very nice knife, a gentlemans whittler, I would get a magnifying glass and look closely at the tang, I have a Utica jack that the tang stamp is/was worn smooth, only at the right angle in the right light with the magnifying glass can it be seen, even now that I know it's there I can't see it unless I really look hard for it. Nice knife no matter what, let us know what you find.
 
Thanks for the comments, glad you guy's like it. I forgot to mention that the nail file has a half-stop. I looked for a tang stamp again and had her right up to my nose but I couldn't see a thing. Not sure if I have a magnifying glass lying around, I'll see what I can find.

Cool knife! You might run it by the guys in Bernard Levine's subforum. They'd surely know.
 
Like a couple of others said - 'I've seen that shield before' or something very much like it, I just can't remember where or on what ? Nice knife.
 
Simonds Mfg. co. Okay. I'll look into it. If I don't find anything I'll try Mr. Levine's subforum. Thanks again for all the comments. I hope to post some other old knives I've acquired myself over the years.
 
Jeez guys.....yes you've seen it before. The knife was made for Simonds Saw and Steel Company (or one of its successors or predecessors). The shield is a "saw" :)

Here is the one I own. I think it's super cool that someone found another....as I doubt very many were made. You can't see it from my picture, but the mark side of the main blade is etched "Simonds Saw & Steel Co." The pile side of the blade has the etch "Saws, Files and Hack Saws"

Feel free to chime in on who you think the knife manufacture was based on the scales, etc.... My knife has no markings on the tang indicating the maker....

I've seen that shield before, too. Quite possibly in the Schrade section of one of Jim Sargent's old American Premium Guide To Knives & Razors.

An auction for a nice Simonds knife with an intact etch just ended. I saw it at the last second and didn't have time to put in a good bid. I just put the first number that entered my head into the box. Unfortuantely there is no prize for second place. :p Although it's not my knife, I thought you guys might like to see the etch. Anyone know if the handle is synthetic or bone?

VERY nice knife guys, and awesome find on the auctions there Jake, my guess the way the scales have shrunk away from the Bolsters and the very smooth edge with no porousness for bone??? Im guessing they would be Synthetic, bad lighting on the pics dont help...but what a beaut of a knife!...neat blades-if the scales are synthetic and very cool etches!...Wow!!
