whittlin' with your edc

Working on a Cherry stick now.

I prefer hard woods. This one is Walnut whittled with a Case Half Congress:

Wow, I'm a little jealous. Have tried several walking sticks in butternut (white walnut), black walnut, and apple with results that pale in conparison to that. Did you lathe that piece before carving? Usually I just rough it out with the chainsaw and finish off with the folder. I have learned my lesson in using branches they just snap in 2 pieces with the slightest adversity.

To the OPs query, I often whittle with my (former) EDC. Now I carry a Kershaw Cryo II but still grab the SOG fielder for whittling...

^^^^^ truth! Jschenk, I giggle every freakin' time I see that picture of your dad. That sir, is priceless :D;)
Thanks, Neal (hee hee hee)

Hey guys,
Back to work, back to stress, back to whittling a whole lot more.
It's not on purpose but is a great escape valve, on holidays I barely touched the wood.
Work in progress little carpenter

That piece of wood is super brittle, it splits everywhere

I'm really blown away by some of these.

What would you guys suggest as a piece of wood to for a first timer? Moreover, what would be a good first try object?

My first attempt at a little guy. Some of the detail you guys are getting on these small carvings is amazing!

Basswood is great, and the boot is also a great advice because it'll teach you to cut with the grain.
Also something like a 5minute owl or penguin is a great confidence builder

Really nice mate, if you thin the grind of the knife you avoid most of the splitting you're suffering( reducing the wedge effect)
