Some of us have been annoying Elliot over in the Traditional forum with our attempts at discussing whittling and carving. He rightly points out that we are in the Traditional Knife discussion forum, so the projects themselves should not be the focus. Sadly, the subject doesn't really seem to be a good fit anywhere.

Whittling seems to be a dying art, and I would like to try to preserve it. It is a non-violent and creative way of using knives that can show those who do not share our passion that there are other uses for a knife than as a weapon. It is definitely a knife-related activity, but it is more about the uses than the knives themselves. The objects created could be called gadgets, but it's about the process more than the end result. It isn't really a survival or wilderness skill, although skill developed by whittling will translate into other areas.

It would be nice to have a place to discuss the subject without making the mods tear their hair out in frustration at us. Or if I am simply too dense to find the already existing place, someone take pity on me and tell me where it is.

Interesting. I'll have to think about it. Certainly there's room for it if we expand the topic to include general woodworking.

We do have an open thread for it within the forum, Jack, but admittedly not a forum dedicated to it.

I actually had been thinking of asking Spark to consider a forum for whittling and other hobbyist crafts or activities. Perhaps now is as good a time as any.

Glad you brought it up.

EDIT:

I see Spark replied while I was composing my draft.

I know we have that thread, and you've had to drag us back onto the subject of knives several times in it. I'd like to reduce your stress before you have to start handing out infractions.

General woodworking would be fine with me as long as it didn't turn into a cabinet making and power tool discussion. There are other forums for that.

Thank you for considering it.

I think it's a grand idea.

As I'm currently trying to finish up my first "ball in a cage" project, I'd love to see a forum dedicated to the subject of whittling. My grandfather spent many hours sitting around with an old Colonial and various pieces of wood from around the farm and I loved watching him. Now that I'm a grandfather myself, I've finally got time to try it myself.

I would love to see more whittling and carving here! If a subforum would keep such posts organized, all the better.

On a rainy day like today or when I'm bored, whittling is a great way to get to play with my knives.

Yablanowitz makes a lot of good points in his posts. I guess there also a lot of edged tools like carving knives, crooked knives etc. that people use that don't fit in the Traditional category, but still are relevant to this forum.

I don't know how much interest it would generate, but I'm all for it.

If it gets popular enough, maybe we could all go in on a bulk order of Band-Aids with a Bladeforums logo. :D

Great idea! the sub -forum AND the Band-aids.
I learned from my Dad, who learned from his Dad and it would be great to se what others have learned and taught.

I would definitely frequent a whittling or woodcarving section. Making wood shaving is one of the first tasks I put a knife to when I get it. Not to mention that I have over a hundred dedicated woodcarving knives, with some specialized for ball-in-balls and ball-in-cage and other whimsical carvings.

^^ This was my first impression, and Elliot stated it. I don't know anything about whittling. That would be interesting.

It could also be a great place to share about lanyard making, knots, sculpturing, art work, etc. Possibly a catch-all for any handcraft a BF member is talented and willing to share/educate/learn in.

On one hand, too many things could be cumbersome, on the other, the forum traffic from this community of talent may surprise us.

"a forum for whittling and other hobbyist crafts or activities."

"lanyard making, knots, sculpturing, art work, etc."

That's a great idea!

Wow, and it's only March! I still have the chance to have another before the year's out! :p

A place for related WIPs and Tutorials, with links to braiding and knot tying. it'd get my traffic.

I think its a great idea as well and would get my attention. Occasionally there is a thread in W&SS regarding carving, but is centered around "bushcraft/woodcraft" skills. A dedicated sub forum for anything carving/woodworking related would be cool.:cool:

MAybe just a general "arts and crafts" subforum.

Feel free to come up with a name that doesn't sound like a daycare activity. :p

I agree that "arts and crafts" is the wrong name, but maybe something along the lines of "whittling, woodworking, and knife related projects."

Whittling, Woodworking, Lanyards, & Crafts

I'd like to see this open to a wide variety of crafts. This would get us more participation, and we could always split off part if it really took off.

Lanyards and knots are a popular topic by themselves. Knot crafts like macrame and knitting come up from time to time.

Why not Craftsmanship, Projects & Hobbies?
