Whittling project - Traditional knives??

Fortunately, the tree still stands Omar! My neighbor just cut some heavy branches that were overbalancing the tree, and one that was starting to block his walkway.

Christian, those knives are about $16 each - a screamin' deal!!

For a laminated blade with a very hard core of (aisi equivalent) o1... I agree, it's a hellava deal. :) I have no idea how come I don't own them yet.

Charlie, this is my hook knife and gouge. The knife is excellent with a single outside bevel. It's extremely sharp, but for small hollowing I prefer the gouge. The knife is 1095, the gouge o1.

This is a scoop that I carved using both tools.

I'll be using the halfwhitt tonight! :)

Nice Scoop, Striga! What is the size? The Wood? Tell me more!!
Beautiful handles on the tools!!

Nice carving and cool knives in this thread -

I love the spike trollets - that will be a good one to have my granddaughters try when they are a little older -

Thanks folks!

Thanks, it's small, made specifically for scooping splenda for mine and my wife's coffee.

For scale.

It's just poplar from Lowes.

The black ash burl on my Deepwoods knives are from the makers special stash. He typically reserves it for the rare traditional hunting knife that he'll make in his spare time. I really want one of those!

Some great tools and projects in this thread. I have wanted to get a set like yours for a while, Charlie. Just hasn't happened yet.

Maybe for the best, another hobby I don't have time for...

Here is that spoon, finished. I decided to leave it in its "as-chiseled" form, along with the spoon/spatula beside it. It has mineral oil on it, and is darkening up some. You might see the difference between it and the one next to it. I altered a store-bought spoon to have a straight edge, and like it so much, I made this spoon/spatula and am gonna make more! Great for stirring sauce and keeping it from sticking!
The spaghetti fork is getting sanded. This is way fun!!
A couple more spoons maybe, and then some bowls.
Down side - I ordered a couple more knives! (image of $$$ flying away!)
I'll "pic 'em" when they get here!

I also made a new band for my hat, just for the Rendevous!

Looking good, Charlie.
Aside from the skill, I like the idea of the straight edge on the spoon.

Great job Charlie. :)

Interesting that you modified a store bought item. I've been looking for a suitable piece of wood for a bowl and haven't found one. I started eyeballing the wooden bowls at every store I go to to do the same thing. I figure if I remove enough wood it's the same as buying a blank! ;)

Unfortunately every bowl I've found has been either bamboo or made up of glued together wood.

What does a man have to do to get a decent piece of wood?!

Probably order one. :)

Edit - oh yeah, you've got (e)mail.

Lovely work.

I recently made a spoon (had a pic somewhere....?!) made with pretty much the same tools as you Charlie (gotta love that Gransfors Hatchets!:)). Working on a bowl at the moment, looking forward to seeing how much of the hollowing out i can do with the hatchet....

Great thread:)

The spoon/spatula in the picture is made from scratch, Anthony. I made it after modifying store-boughts and liking the way they worked.
One way to find wood is to find a city crew (if you live in the city) or a hydro crew trimming or cutting trees. I always have a look to see what they are cutting, even if it is just for firewood.

I use these small W2 fixed blades by Lee Ferguson (no relation) for carving, about 20 bux each. I use the pointed one on top the most. The 2011 ball-in-box has linseed oil on it, brings out the grain in the basswood.

You have some skills there, Charlie! I really like the whole set:thumbup:

The tools being shown really are calling me. Makes me want to try my hand at this.

Keep the beauties coming!

Ah, I see. Yes, I'm constantly scanning my surroundings for donor wood, but it just hasn't happened. I look at firewood bundles with care, which must make me look mad, but there are worse things to be. ;)

Thanks for the tip.

Love the carvings, as well as the knives. I'll certainly be looking into those. The price sounds ridiculously nice, and they are pretty. I've never tried w2 either.

Thanks. I hadn't used it before either but am now a fan. They came really sharp and take a wicked edge when stropped. Initially, I only bought the one on the bottom, and it works really well when you need serious leverage. After getting a few others and use, find that the top one gets the most use but an assortment is nice.

Charlie, I like your spoons, especially the one with the deeper dished out area. Striga, good idea for a small scoop. You fellas got me in the carving mood.
