I have been commissioned to make a Scout master a knife, General purpose with a consideration of whittling. Not carving figures sort of whittling.

Blade will be about 3.5 inches long and I was wondering what you my peers think the blade type should be.

I was thinking of a clip point or maybe a drop point.

What I know is it will be satin or hand rubbed S30v (cause thats what I have in stock) Brass half guard, brass pins, butter fly cocobolo handles,

What are your thoughts on thong tubes? Brass to match pins and guard.

Leather Sheath of Course.

I owe this guy a favour so it won't be huge in the profit area, but hey I like making stuff. I may make two and he picks. I think I'll make this a WIP thread too, just because you guys are great.

I will post a pic of the design ideas.

I think the idea of a work in progress for this is cool. As to the knife design I think the 3rd one is the best. My reason is this. I believe it is a more "Bushcraft style". The top one is considered a Wharncliff. IMO. The second looks like a fighter. Once again. IMO The fourth one I like the handle on soooo. The bushcraft one with the fourth ones handle. But hey, I dont make many knives. Just my .02

#4 because I like the small waisted handle...and rounded but

#3 blade shape but with a higher thin grind..not a scandi fan

thong tubes= yes - on centerline with the handle pins

I can't see a guard bring useful on a whittling Knife ... I do however like a clip Point.

Well personally if I were having one commisioned I would not limit my self to whittling but if that is what he wants I would lean towards number 1. No need for a drop point on a whittling knife! The handle needs to be of a size for control ability! My O2 :)

Okay.

I have taken what a few of you said and thought it over and drew this.

The but may be a bit more rounded than the photo shows.

I have been considering the same thing for a different, former scout master (oddly enough named Irv Barron). I like the design. Have you considered a boy-scout-uniform tan for the handle? Red handle liners (maybe just red epoxy)? Boy Scout logo mosaic pins in brass and red? If you find the mosaic pins let me know. I haven't found any and have been considering making one. The process doesn't look that hard. Although, someone here may have better resources where to find one.

I was going to put red spacers on the knife. The boyscout logo in mosiac is interesting I will look into it and see how hard it is to make them.

I just went and browsed the Scouts Canada site and they have some pins that you may be able to embed in the handle if the mosaic turns out to be no go. Not sure of the quality of the pins though.

I would be really nice to have something identifiable with the Scouts on the knife to make even more of a keepsake.

You're on the right track, if'n it was me. One thing I remember from scouting days, we cut a fair amount of string, cord, thongs and rope. Those bloody Spanish notches can be kind of a nuisance catching on stuff like.

I think the answer may be to make the pins. It would take more patient than I have, however. Using multiple lines of thread, wire, fishing line, etc, you could make your own mosaic rod, then cut multiple pins from it. Seeing the vast amount of scout knifes and projects pertaining to scouts, I'm amazed no one has made them in bulk yet.

I can do a pretty nice hollow on my 14 inch wheel that will go high up on a 1.25 inch wide knife. My plan was a flat grind. For a whittler, I thought flat.

I looked at the mosiac pin supplies and there is no one that does the fleur de lies in a mosaic. Would need an extrusion for it and I don't have the equipment to do it.

I can always make a stamp with a Fleur de Lies on it. Then emboss the Leather.
Please be patient on the photo essay, I have a day job.

Frank
