Here's my very limited attempts.
I got a little bored on one of my days off, and started scratching on a piece of hobby bass (balsa?) wood. I had a catalog of Browning gun safes on the coffee table, sitting next to an iPad. Any guess as to where my inspiration came from? [emoji2] All done with an RR Barlow and Elephants Toenail.
Then I noticed that I might have enough wood to try an attempt at small (Officers Size) grips like I had on my carry gun that day. Was a Springer Micro Compact 1911 .45 with thin grips. Used the same two inexpensive knives for everything right up until I hit it with a sponge sanding block. Learned a few lessons along the way that will help if I ever do decide to try again with actual useable hardwood.
Was using this little guy on the left for my size/pattern.
On a wall in our house we have a hanging of carved wood with the names of each member of our family. My in laws had it made on one of their trips to the Philippines. At first it just had my wife and I, and our first kid. Then when we had another kid, just happened they had another trip planned, and had one more made. But when our last kid came along, Granny decided they were done with international travel, so he went nameless for nearly 14 years.
Finally decided to try one on my own. Sketched out his name the best I could trying to mimic the font from the others. Tried drawing a similar jungle/rainforest scene. I did use an exacto for the initial letter cuts. But then did the rest of the roughing with the same yellow Rough Riders. Halfway into it, I realized there was just too much detail work for my skill level and a Barlow knife, so I then broke out the Dremel to grind out big areas and tweak some details. But for a first time doing anything like that, I was pleased with how it turned out.
A while back I picked up Spyderco's wooden Dragonfly kits for my boy. Now I'm tempted to try recreating it from scratch, and maybe do something similar for other knife styles. I have seen similar pre-made kits for slip joints and Buck 110 style lockbacks.
