Who all used to be a Scout?

Great stories guys! Somehow I had a feeling there were probably lots of you out there who had been involved in Scouting..... :)

Both my brother and I are eagle scouts. Our Dad was on the executive committee of the North Texas Council for near 20 years.

Knife and ax use and safety are well taught in scouting.

scouts canada, 52nd sutherland
89-97, went to the 97 jambouree in thunder bay(camped in Terra Nova right next door to the american troop)...

Air Cadets, 702 Lynx and 107 Spitfire
96-02

I'm far more comfortable in the bush than I am in the city.

I was a cub scout or a cubbie as my mom used to call it, she was the den mother; then on to boy scouts where i was the quarter master. The kids in my pack were never serious about it, so i quit in high school; wish i got in with a good group of kids; cause i would have loved to work towards eagle scout. :(

Eagle. Silver Award. Vigil. Went back in with my son and sayed in. 34 yrs and counting. Just spent the weekend training adult leaders.

If you were in and if it was a valuable experience, consider that Scouting is short over 250,000 adults to have the adult/boy ratio of 1970.

Correction: IS a troop 212 Eagle scout. Its like the Marines, once an Eagle, always an Eagle.

Hear, hear, and amen. What's that saying, "There is no end to the Eagle Scout trail."? ;)

Once a Marine, always a Marine, once a Mason, always a Mason. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle. For some reason, the great organizations like to hang onto people! :)

Cub Scout....Mother took me out when all the other kids got their merit badges at the big presentations, and mine always came in too 'late' for some reason.:(

Yes, indeed I did. It seems a "Long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." I think I stayed a Cubscout.

It was the late 1960s to early 1970s. The experience did teach me the basics of being prepared, for which I am grateful.

The basic tenet, however, "Never leave your scout knife at home," has become anathema in today's paranoid society.

The concept of able to fend for oneself these days sadly seems have gone out of style.

I was a perennial Tenderfoot.
Loved campouts, jamborees, the hikes and all the outdoor skill stuff but our troop was full of a bunch of rich punks. I wasn't and though they tried to make life hell for me, as a countryboy it was easy to turn the tables on the 'recently initiated to the wild'. Lot of fun for a couple of years. I hope I never meet up with any of those guys in the city...

Hey Peter, great thread!

I was a Cub Scout (my Mom was our Den Mother)...Then on to the Boy Scouts, (where for a time my Dad was our Scoutmaster, as was my Grandfather before him).

Lot of great memories...Especially loved camping out. Talk about comraderie!

I was an "army brat" and up until my teens, we moved around a lot (My Dad was stationed in Germany for three years...moved back to the States when I was 4 yrs old. I went to four different elementary schools in New Jersey, Florida, Arizona, and Maryland). Wherever we moved my folks made certain I got to join the local troop. While serving as our Scoutmaster, my Dad was still very much in the Army...and I might add,...at the time, he was a D.I. !!! (Oh yeah...having him as my Scoutmaster was all kinds of fun for me...NOT!).

That aside, I still loved the Scouts.

It's a real shame that the most important lessons learned in the Boy Scouts are so seldom taught (or reinforced) to today's kids...Little things like concepts of honor, promise, and common courtesy. :(

Yeah Baby!

Cub Scouts, Webelos, BSA (Star. Distracted by wimmins'n'alcohol...), Explorer Post (Sheriffs Office)..

Was a gadget person early on. Probably started with those multi-function binocular/magnifier/compass/mirror dohickeys where the lenses folded down or up as needed.

Definitely a canoein fool. We'd go to Point Peelee (sp?) in Canada, and a few of us tried to canoe to Peelee Island. Long way. We decided to swamp our canoes for S&G's. Man were the adults torqued. They'd called the authoritiies thinkin we'd "not made it"... Too funny.

Nephews are in. Try and teach them some stuff we learned.

Most of our scoutmasters were WWII and Korean vets. Knew outdoor stuff pretty well.

There are 4 of us who still are in touch weekly or monthly, the other 3 are Eagles. I'll be the black sheep....

Eagle Scout 93. It was one of those experiances that had a large effect on my life, from things like honor to being prepaired. I've had a hard time recently with friends that I hold to my standards (Those pesky high standards that Scouts are held to) and many don't make it, wether they were scouts or not. And those who were Scouts always make the cut (regardless of rank accived). And it's hard to find those that weren't.

My experirance is that Scouting is one of the best thing you can do for growing child. The skills and direction given I learned in the Scouts have been a large and Proud part of my life.

And as too being a gear head? Yea, it had a great effect on it :)

I was a Cub for one year, but my den died out and it never worked out to get back in to another one. After that, I didn't know any scouts personally so I never thought much about getting back in.

Fast Forward 28 years: I am a first year den leader with two Cubs of my own (one Bear, one Wolf). They are really enjoying it and so am I, even if I have to stand in front of Wal-Mart selling popcorn! I even survived Akela Camp a few weeks ago with about 125 local Cubs +parents (I was told the camp the year before hit 600 parents and Cubs). And I came away with a greater respect for the Boy Scouts after seeing the way these young men worked the camp. I'm hoping my boys keep their interest in it because I really like what I am seeing.

Well, I've got a Den meeting in an hour at the county court house. The Co. Judge is giving our dens an election night tour of the court house.

See ya!

Absolutely changed my life - thank The Good Lord for my friend inviting me. I had to kick it into HIGH gear since I started so late in life - almost 16 when I started and I had to get my Eagle VERY quickly.

 Made it through Cubs and Weblos as a kid, Dad was USAF so we traveled. Now have a 15 year old First Class, and a seven year old just starting out. Mighty proud of both! (Both have knife collections of their own, BTW) Learned alot back then, and now trying to help my boys learn as much as possible. We hike, canoe, camp, shoot, or just hang out in the woods as much as possible. Time well spent IMHO.

spent a little while as a cub scout with my mom as the den leader. Missed the whole boy scout thing (no girls) and spent high school with Explorer Post 315 SAR. Had an awesome time, lots of hiking/camping especially liked the winter stuff and the fact it was co-ed;-)>

I didn't know about the shortage in leadership, that might be a lot of fun to get into.

Was a scout, participated in the CAP (Civil air patrol), then after college became a usa ranger. Scouts and CAP really gave me an edge.
