Who Cares!?!?!?!?

I'm far from being an Alloy Addict meaning I don't buy knives according to the steel used. I trust the maker or manufacturer to use what they feel is the best for the intended knife. I wouldn't however tell someone else not to consider the steel being used, when they're considering buying a knife.

ElCuchillo, of course you have the right to your oppinion, but you may want to let the others here to have theirs as well. If a subject has no interest for you, that's fine, be more selective in the threads you read. I know I am.

Wow, did I get my butt handed to me or what!? LOL. It's all good, I had it coming, and I bow down to all of you for your points. Ya'll kept going on and on about how these polls are for everyone to express their opinions, and these posts are here for people to talk about their knives, their tastes, etc. Well, these forums are also here for people to come togeter and put someone in their place, and I guess this time it was me who was put in his place, and THEN some!! LOL. Anyway, I was in a crabby mood last night, and got frustrated with the posts I had been reading. I wasn't necessarily saying all knives were equal, because no, I WOULDN'T go and buy a knife from the shopping channel, or buy a chinese bargain knife. The steel may be sharp and cut as good as any other knife, but the fit and finish suck. I was more talking about how a sharp knife is a sharp knife regardless of what you are using, whether it's stainless, Carbon, or whatever ( I have both, by the way.). However, I'll take my butt kicking like a man. I asked for it.

No butt kicking necessary. Your opinions are just as valid as mine, or anyone else's.:D (Except, maybe Cliff and Joe's opinions. They cary a lot of weight, with me, at least.:) )

It's all good. If I'd known the extent of the eventual piling on, I wouldn't have added my own two cents.

I've been there, i.e. posted something when in a "mood" and then dreaded logging on the next day due to knowing what I would find.

I think most people on the traditional forum would even agree that too much is often made of supposed differences in steel, and that it can be taken to absurd lengths. My pet peeve is when people denigrate certain steels like 420HC and 440A, saying they are crappy, junk, etc. As someone else pointed out, different steels simply have different qualities, and are suited for different things.

I must admit I've on occasion felt the same annoyance at these kind of discussions that prompted your initial post.

Well all's well that ends well, to coin a phrase.

Come back anytime, ElCuchillo, really. Most who hang out in this particular sub-forum are good and civil people. Some of the other sub-forums can get brutal. :D

ElCuchillo, taken with good humor and grace on your part. Good characteristics. Welcome. Yeah, we do hear you on the frustration. Too many people have to make things an all or nothing, theirs is best thing to feel justified. It does get tedious, which is why I hang out in this spot the most.

I used to be in that PC vs Mac, Canon vs Nikons, this vs that game. Truth is, I've made my living with all the above at one time or another. Thy're all tools and each has good points and bad points. If you know how to use them, then as long as it works, you can do well with it. Same thing with knives and steel. We just have our preferences and qualities that matter the most to us, where others may have different things that matter to them. It's when the all or nothing crowd gets ranting on their latest infatuation as THE only thing worth having that it gets pretty tedious. That naturally leads to serious frustration. You just happened to rant to the choir is all.

Bests,
Amos

:D :D you are probably correct.:D :D However, I haven't, yet at least, found anything made of 420 or 440A that I need or want.:p :p

Ben.

Well said !...we have all posted things on-line we have later come to "reconsider". ElCuchillo, you had a valid point to make....I agree with longbeachguy, and you, that too much can certainly be made of blade steel. But remember, certain types of steel excel more than others at a particular task. The "whitlin' " crowd like their carbon steel for good reason....not much "bests" good ol' carbon steel when you're workin' with wood for a long spell.
We are all glad you came back...and hope you stick around !

-My best regards

Oy, I've been reading all these threads, and most of them talk about how good this steel is,or how good that steel is. How Carbon is god, and 420c is a disgrace. WHO CARES!!??!?!?! A knife is meant to cut, period, and if the knife does that, then it's good. Some knives hold an edge longer, some hold a sharper edge, whatever. They cut. Tru sharp? CV steel? Carbon? Stainless? Who cares. It's a knife. It's meant to cut. Bottom line is this, I carry a SAK. A Sportsman. Stainless steel? Soft steel? I know.... no, better yet, I GUARANTEE that my knife cuts just as good as any pocketknife knife you guys can throw at me. ANY pocketknife. Queen? Case? Buck? Hen&Rooster? All good. SAKs? All good. Day in and day out, my knife can perform equally as well as ANY knife on this site. Why? Because it cuts. Ease up on the comparison, guys. Ease up on the "I have a tru sharp, and it's good, but I really really really really want a carbon this or that." Why not just sit back and enjoy the knife you currently have? Go cut something. Have some fun.

Settle down Beavis!

Well, we can can all "gripe" at times. And yes, sometimes it seems to get out of hand. Everyone here has their own opinions and experiences. No one person's experience is more vaild than another.

As someone who has made knives for over 25 years I tend to be a little picky. But then I do know what goes into making a knife (and what should'nt). And of course most, not all) factory knives are mass produced, so its quite different. But with all that said. When it comes down to it a knife is a tool, and what is important is that it performs its function well (and to the satisfaction of its user).

Of course, since this is a forum of "knife knuts", this is a little different. Everone here is interested in more than just something that cuts.

With all that said, we all have good days and bad days :)

I am fulfilling my life long quest of finding the best knife. This forum helps me feed the drive.

Welcome to "The Quest".
I think we're all looking for "The Knife".
Don't know if we really, deep down, want to find it, because that would mean we don't have the perfect excuse to buy more knives. :D

I think everyone should read the whole thread before posting flames and bashes:mad: !! ElCuchillo has taken it like a man, and these late-to-the-party-flaming remarks are uncalled for!!!
It's too easy to take a kick at someone on the ground, not to mention bordering on cowardly; or is it lazy??
Know what you are talking about before making gratuitous remarks:jerkit: !!

I am not flaming, I just wish he hadn't accepted a kicking before I got to take him up on his challenge, my Native with S30V, set at 17 degrees, would have loved to take on his SAK, and I won't get started on how sharp a straight razor is compared to a swiss army knife... LOL. He has a little bit of a point, we can become steel snobs (I am not too bad yet, as I still buy 420 j2 Kershaws) at times, but that is why we come here, so we don't have to buy a $400 dollar knife to experience INFI, ect. we can experience it through someone else untill we have the money to get one.

It's all good, Waynorth, let 'em go. Like I said before, I asked for it. Besides, I learn from each comment made AGAINST me. I think that after all has been said and done, both my points AND all of yours have been made and understood. They may not be expressed the proper way, but language regardless, the message is there and the point made. Actually, this sub-forum is like a gang. LOL. I've been jumped in, beaten up a little, smacked around a bit..... or alot, dusted off, and made part of the family. Haha. I'm still here, and have not gone anywhere, and am not GOING anywere. I'm still relatively new to the world of knifes, and sometimes I need to get slapped up-side the head and told "What are ya, STOOpid!?" LOL. But with the knowledge here in this site, I am learning alot.

Shame we're all so spread out. Can you imagine what fun a Cuttin Festival would be? We could have all sorts of cutting challenges and classifications, maybe some cutlery makers demos and presentations, not to mention just some good old fashioned chow where it IS considered proper ettykit to use your knife at the table.

Think of the tradin that could be going on.
