Who carries a hatchet camping? What type?

I carry an HB Forge Shawnee throwing hawk, highly suggested. 40 dollars for a hand forged, extremely well designed and balanced throwing hawk. I also use it for simple camp chores that I cannot do with a knife or machete. It basically throws itself, it is extremely well balanced and just rolls out of your hand.

Thanks guys for the input - I'm actually leaning away from the Wetterlings and Gransfors Bruks as of now due to the fact that they are more specialized for softwoods (as this is the predominant wood in N Europe)... Where I camp (Catskills) it is about 75% hardwood, which require a different pattern to throw bigger chips...
The difference between an axe for hardwoods, and one for soft is the shape of the cutting edge, not the axe bit itself. What's more, most of sweden's forests are baltic birch/sugar maple, pretty hard woods in my book. I haven't been to the Northeast in some years, but is maple not a predominant tree in such forests.

The GB axes are hands down the best on the market today, pricy but worth it. In rural Sweden, nearly everyone heats their home with wood, and the traditional construction methods rely heavily on the use of an axe.

Lastly, I feel confident that you have the necessary skills to re-profile an edge designed for the wrong type of wood.

I carry a cold steel throwing axe. It's does everything I need it to do plus it's fun to throw.

Well, I've used my Wetterlings, on many trees in the Carolinas, dead or alive. I worked for a electrical line cleaning company, and 4 out of our 5 man crew carried these axes. The one guy who didn't, carried a 16" Estwing and always wanted to borrow mine.
After I thought him how to properly use an axe, he realized he didn't need the whole heavy metal handle deal.

Most of my collection. One or two need some new wood, and a hell of an afternoon with some steel wool.

And my old trusty True Temper, it does most the work at camp.

When I'm camping, I bring a medium sized Fiskars axe with a plastic handle. Very light and very sharp.
