I am thinking about a little neck knife for my next trip abroad and I was wondering who carries one and how long is it. The reason I ask this is do to concerns of comfort while sitting and moving around. For example the Fehrman Thru Hiker has a 7.5" oal while the Ranger Knives Little Bird is only 4" oal. To me that makes the Little Bird a lot more comfortable, but, I”VE NEVER CARRIED A NECK KNIFE.

Thus, what do you guys who carry a neck knife carry, how often do you carry it and how comfortable is it. Any and all replies will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

right now I have the Becker Necker. It is 6-3/4" OAL, blade is a hair under 1-1/4 wide. I like the wide blade. It's sharp and carbon steel so it is easy to sharpen. People complain about the handle being to short but with the things I do with mine I have had no trouble.

I carry a two Spyderco SPOTs regularly. However, I used the holes in the sheaths and some nylon chord to rig them for horizontal carry on my belt, one on each side in the front. Barely noticable, even with just a t-shirt on.

I often carry a neck knife by tying the cord to my belt loop or belt and letting it hang in my front pocket. This method is both discrete and comfortable allowing me to carry larger blades than if I was wearing them around my neck. My favorite is a Murray Carter custom which is about 7in OAL.

Hideaway Knife. It's very small and very light. To me the weight is more important than length. Usually though I use a clip onto my undershirt so I can get to it easily but without the chain around my neck which I am not accustomed to.

Small and light is definitely the way to go on neck knives. Hard to beat a Hideaway Knife in this role.

I also have a small Hideaway, with a paracord covered brass chain around my neck. I forget it is there, it is so comfortable.

When I carry a neck knife, it's a Hideaway. Small, light - hardly know its there.

Right now Im carrying an Anzo Ti Sticker on my neck. Its about 3 inches, strictly SD since it doesnt take much of an edge.
I would suggest trying to wear the knife slung over one shoulder so it rests against your rib cage about 4-6 inches below the opposite armpit. I find this is more comfortable and prints much less. You dont get that bulge you normally get when wearing a neck knife. The only draw back is that you can only access it comfortably with one hand.

The Simonich Bitteroot has an inch and a half blade with a total length under 4". Even in the sheath it's only 5" overall. Light to the point of unnoticeable. I added beads to the chain and sheath to give it a little presence! :D

Treat it with respect. This little knife will cut. If you score the Talonite version, it will cut forever.

I have a necker on almost on a daily basis. When in the riding position over my road or hybrid bicycle, I currently choose the AG Russell Bird and Trout. This small lightweight can really cut due to its thin blade stock. The injection molded checkered FRN handles makes for easy cleanup and is hygienic to use. Coupled with a kydex sheath from the Dozier shop, it is a great lightweight to have on all the time.

When off the bike, I currently have on a Spyderco Ronin, again with a kydex sheath from the Dozier shop. This blade of course is much more suited for serious matters.

I have two I carry, Emerson LaGriffe and Becker Necker. The LaGriffe is smaller and lighter than the Becker but the Becker's blade is a more usefull shape.

I have spent a LOT of time and money finding the PERFECT neck knife. Cold Steel makes some neat little inexpensive pieces I own and rek'mnd. Take a peek at their site. Newt Livesay has a few different neck knives, I have a couple and they are cool too. I actually carried a Benchmade Nimravus Cub in M2 I think around my neck for an entire summer at work. Big, but AWESOME.

I saw something neat on a COP friend once...He had a Spyderco Delica Stainless in a Kydex mini-sheath on a chain around his neck...He wore it long down HIS BACK!!! It had a handcuff key on it too. Interesting thought. Fixed blades are better though.

The neck knife I found (FINALLY) that fits nearly EVERY need I have had...Falkniven WM1. Small, strong, sharp, light, good grip, and can be used if need be as a backup...

Backup to the Glock 19, KelTech 380, MT Socom Elite, Leatherman Micra, Surefire D2, and small rape-whistle on my keys. The entire setup looks as impressive as it is functional.

I wear the lil' loco from shivworks just about everywhere I go.(except the obvious no-knife places, of course) Honestly, I completely forget I have it on most of the time.

I carry neckers alot. It helps if you also have other ways to carry besides neck, as in a pocket, belt loop and, my favourite, chest or vest pocket.
Bud Nealy has large and small, circa 3" and 5" respectively, in most models and that's about right, although I do carry smaller and bigger. i will even carry larger Polkowskis like the Scorpion because they are so slim.
Nealy's carry systems are the most versatile and secure IMHO and there are production versions available for some of them
. I also like the small japanese influenced wrapped knives like Rob Douglas' and Wally Hayes'. Several good makers make gorgeous and functional small japanese style blades.
My personal favourite is a little Simonich pikuni.
You might also consider talonite or stellite if you'll be sweating to avoid rust and magnetic properties.

I carry a variety of Newt Livesay's neckers. They run about 3" blade and 6 1/2" to 7 1/2" OAL more or less.

I almost walked in the Govt building this morning with my Lucas Burnley neck knife on. I completely forgot I had it on. Truth be known, I could technically get in with it, since the blade is less than 3", but I don't like to rock the boat here at work.
