Who Carries Opinels, and Why?

for those instances where an XL Espada might offend somebody's sensibilities... ;)

Use mine for food prep all the time. I have used them to try out file patterns too since they are so cheap. If I screw up the pattern I'm not upset.

I like Opinels I don't carry one though. I'll have it in a kit at times or use one as a picnic knife.

I became a member of bladeforums to explore knives because I found them to be fun, useful, utilitarian and sometimes admittedly excessive.

For what Opinels are I've found more interesting examples of simple traditional knives...

I admit that I have no intention of reducing my life down to the bare essentials which is what an Opinels kinda is. I'd rather EDC knives that I find to be fun and utilitarian.

Opinels are cheap, great cutters, and fun to play with. I got interested from comments on this site, got a #8 carbon because it seemed to have been the most popular, and kind of got into it, except not all the way. It didn’t quite fit my large hands, was hard to open when in high humidity, even with the “coup de Savoyard,” and when dealing with hard use, wasn’t quite up to it. But then (also due to the influence of this group) I tried a #9. For almost no pocket penalty, it fit my hand perfectly, opened easily enough when damp, and cut anything I needed. Now I have one each carbon and inox that I use all summer long for gardening, food prep and just about anything. I switch them out with my other folders, “just because.” Maybe they’re not for everybody, but I like them.
